Rpi 4B USB controller crashing

Thu Apr 01, 2021 8:59 am

Hello,

I have a rpi 4B, running ubuntu server 20.04 LTS
I also have an external harddrive connected to my RPI.
The controller keeps crashing and the hdd crashes with it and wont recover until i reboot.
(the harddrive is ntfs, i have checked it with chkdisk and hard disk sentinel, it shows 100% health and everything runs fine on windows)

Error code here:

I cannot replicate the error, it happens randomly. Usually after being idle for a long time (overnight)

The rpi is fully updated:

Code: Select all

BCM2711 detected
VL805 firmware in bootloader EEPROM
BOOTLOADER: up-to-date

 LATEST: Thu Sep 3 12:11:43 UTC 2020 (1599135103)
 FW DIR: /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/default
VL805: up-to-date
CURRENT: 000138a1
 LATEST: 000138a1
Please help

What brand is the USB2SATA controller of your external drive?

You might want to check out viewtopic.php?f=28&t=245931&p=1850872&h ... s#p1850872 and set some usb-storage.quirks.

That sounds like an SSD rather than a hard disk drive.

I think it's possible after being idle for some time the SSD decides to perform internal maintenance tasks, for example, copying data from the persistent cache to higher density flash. If so, this could create a power surge that randomly causes things to stop working due to an inadequate power supply.

It's also possible that power saving puts the drive to sleep and the Pi can't figure out how to wake it up again. If you start a script that slowly reads and writes to the drive, say every 5 minutes a few blocks, does it survive the night?

Just a suggestion based on a similar problem I had.
Could be a power problem.
Could you try to connect the HDD via a powered hub and verify if the problem persist ?

Are you using PoE with one of the original PoE hats? USB outages were a problem with those.
Headless PI. OMG, someone cut it's head off. Oh, hang on. it didn't have one to start with.
