Hi;

I am looking for an SSB radio receiver for our HAB project, whilst searching I have come across the Yaesu VR-500.
It's not listed as a recommended radio receiver but according to the manual it is capable of USB and LSB and has a 3.5mm audio out.

Will this be OK for a HAB receiver?

I have also placed a bid on a YUPITERU MVT-7100 (currently at £87)

It should work, though I don't know of anyone who has used one. Online reviews are .. variable, and no doubt its performance is compromised by being so compact. I'd give it a miss.

Thanks Dave, I only found one posts ref HAB tracking where this radio was used and it wasn't fantastic.

There are a couple of Yupiteru MVT-7100 on eBay, one is being bid for currently at £89 (Now at £105 after my latest bid!!) and the other is £124.00 Buy it Now.
The first comes complete boxed with in car charger and mains charger the other has no charger and no in car charger but comes with an additional Rubber Duck Antenna. Chargers can be found on Amazon for under £10 and I guess in car chargers should be available.

Our project fund is not able to afford the radio so I am going to buy one myself happy to spend around £150.00, would you be able to advise what to buy?

Been cruising the Internet for a couple of hours looking at second hand radios:

Yupiteru MVT-7100 (Ebay) Complete £147.00 and climbing
Yupiteru MVT-7100 (Ebay) No Charger with rubber duck aerial £124.99 Buy it Now

AOR AR8000 £55.00 (Battery Case cover is missing and the springs for one of the batteries (easy enough to get around) - could be a bargain?
AOR AR8000 £140 - Good condition with charger (One on RadioWorld for £229!!)

Not knowing which is better I am tempted to go for either the Yupiteru MVT-7100 for £124.99 and buy an after market charger from Amazon or the AR8000 for £140.

Any preference ?
