Using USB to power touchscreen

Tue Nov 21, 2017 1:30 pm

Quick question, would it be possible to power the Pi touchscreen using USB? Maybe with the use of a USB breakout.

Sorry stupid question! Just been doing more research it turns out you have to power it from an external power supply or from the GPIO ports. Why can't it be plugged in the the Pis USB ports but it can be powered from the GPIO pins. Is it that the GPIO pins provide more current.

You can power both from one power supply, providing that power supply can provide enough current to run both. The cable you linked to, powers the Pi from the display board. Your power supply would be plugged into the micro USB on the display board. There are also Y cables out there. Your power supply plugs into it, then it splits to two cables, one plugs into the Pi and one to the display.
I made my own cables up. My display and Pi are both powered from a common power supply.

Thanks for the help. The cable included with the SmartiPi Touch case(http://cpc.farnell.com/smarticase/smt2n ... dp/SC14549) looks like it should do the job as I am getting the case anyway and I already have a suitable power supply.

That's the Y cable (or reasonable facsimile) I've seen. on a few sites. It should work out OK for you.
