Pi + Display = ePub Reader

Tue Oct 27, 2015 9:35 pm

Got my official Raspi display yesterday. Way Cool!!

Thought it might make a nice ePub reader.
With a bit of googling I came across Lucidor which is free and can run on Debian Linux.

It has a requirement for XULRunner and the docs recommend to have Firefox installed which includes XULRunner. That turned out to be problematic on the Pi. However there is a fork of Firefox named Iceweasel which can be installed on the Pi from the command line with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install iceweasel
Once Iceweasel is installed you can get the deb package for Lucidor with:

Code: Select all

wget http://lucidor.org/get.php?id=lucidor_0.9.10-1_all.deb
This will download a file named
get.php?id=lucidor_0.9.10-1_all.deb
which I renamed:

Code: Select all

mv get.php?id=lucidor_0.9.10-1_all.deb lucidor_0.9.10-1_all.deb
Then installed the package with:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i lucidor_0.9.10-1_all.deb
After a reboot I added Lucidor to the Pi's desktop menu under:
Menu > preferences > Main Menu Editor > New Item
with
Name: Lucidor
command: Lucidor

I copied a couple of ePubs from my Windows system using WinSCP to test things out and it works great. Pubs are full color and in-page links work just fine. Lucidor even has a full screen mode which can be controlled from the Lucidor file file nenu.

I first set this up on a B+ pi with a fresh install of Raspbian Jessie but it was a bit slow so I moved the SD card to a Pi2 and it performs wonderfully.

I've always been a fan of fbreader ( since using it on the Nokia n800 ):

sudo apt-get install fbreader

Calibre has a reader as well as pretty much everything you need for changing formats and maybe publishing. It's not fast though, maybe just the reader is. It's in the standard debs.
