Official display RRP?

Fri Apr 13, 2018 1:17 am

I was interested in buying an official display but after looking at the two official resellers in my country (Australia), I wanted to know if $155 (before postage costs) is the actual recommended retail price, or if I should consider importing from the UK or America.
I am not paying that kind of money for a 480 resolution screen, it seems somewhat overly expensive.

See the Raspberry Pi Foundation buying guide. https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/ra ... -now-modal

There seem to be 2 local options that are cheaper than you have indicated.

Comparing those offers with equivalent recommended sources in the UK and applying a currency conversion chosen randomly via the Internet, the Au prices seem just a shade higher than the UK equivalent - perhaps 10%.

You would need to factor in the shipping cost and convenience before making a decision.

Remember that this display is pretty certain to work with your RPi and has the RPF name and experience behind it.

The blog post with the product announcement is here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/the-ea ... i-display/

That was 30 months ago - the UK prices today look rather higher than the equivalent of 60 (us)$.

It's GBP£60 at https://thepihut.com/products/official- ... en-display
https://www.modmypi.com/pis-and-periphe ... y-official

https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/co ... GBP&To=AUD
Converts that to AUD$109.85

So you're looking at AUD$45 markup that someone is fleecing you for.

A 41% markup is not "a shade higher" in my book. That's way over their bulk importing costs. That's profiteering.

Thanks for the useful links and info. I'll look elsewhere.

I can only afford around ~$100AUD currently, so its at least good to know the quoted price was indeed not the RRP.

However, after some measuring over the weekend, it appears that the official display won't fit anywhere reasonable on my dash, so I'll have to look into other options anyway :(
