Arch linux and official display

Thu Oct 12, 2017 2:33 pm

Hello rpi people,

I am thinking of finally getting rpi official display, but I am interested, does it depends on raspbian?
My flavour of choice is usually arch, but searching the web I could find instructions only for raspbian.
So my question is, can I combine rpi official display with arch os? (If so, are there any tutorials)
Are there other distros that support display?

Thank you
Gnu/Linux,
because I'd rather own a free OS
than steal one that's not worth paying for.

It depends on the hardware and bootcode - not Raspbian. The display works perfectly with Win10 IoT. I've never tried Arch on my RPi3B with the display.

The touchscreen part needs the appropriate kernel driver to be loaded which requests data from the VPU.
The rest is handled by the firmware by altering where the standard frame buffer device is routed.

I'm currently using the official 7" touchscreen whilst developing PINN to check all the OSes it can install (about 50 at the moment) are installing and working properly. The only one I recall that doesn't work out of the box is rtandroid which just needs some tweaks to config.txt to correct the resolution.

hello guys,

earlier today I managed to get on irc at #raspberrypi, where I was told that if I use 32 bit arch on rpi3 I should be fine. That kernel should have all drivers and such stuff. (noob terminology here)

so procount, your post warms my hart confirming that it works on almost 50 distros, but would be nice to see: "yes, it works on arch", but I'll take your answer as gold.

In any case, if I get stuck, I'll come back here to ask for your help.

Now to the fun part of buying display!

Thank you all for your time and input.
