RPI CM3 / GPIO27 as output - doesn't boot anymore

Hi,

I have made a simple DT overlay to use GPIO27 as output:

I am at a loss here as the default state for this pin is INPUT so I really don't quite get what it has to do with the sdhost module.

Fortunately this pin is used for LAN9514 reset so it's not a show stopper at the moment if it doesn't work, but I would like to have it all enabled as designed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Does changing the GPIO number to something else allow the board to boot?

My theory is that your overlay is interfering with the GPIO/pinctrl driver's operation, hence the warnings from multiple seemingly unconnected drivers.

Can you post the whole of the output from dmesg?

I did a little more browsing and I think that instead of an device overlay I need to define this in dt-blob as DT overlays are by my understanding (now) used as and underlying part for a device driver where-as plain GPIO which is not used by a device driver should be defined in dt-blob, should one need/want the pin configuration be set as soon as possible in the boot process.

BTW: there is no other output from the dmesg - i.e. can't even do a dmesg as the boot stops and this has been captured from the tty UART console hooked to the module and before these messages there is nothing that would show any more information regarding this, just plain old info.

Yes, you could use dt-blob.bin to set a GPIO as an output, but then the question is how are you going to use it after that? GPIO27 pulls low from boot, so it will stay low until something switches it to an output and drives it high, and that should be a clean LOW-to-HIGH transition. dt-blob.bin is able to set this up quickest, followed by Device Tree, but this speed only matters if you want an early LOW-to-HIGH transition because the startup state will be LOW from boot regardless.

If you do decide to use dt-blob.bin, you may want to let the firmware reset the LAN9514 on your behalf (obviously that will depend on your application). In dt-blob.dts (the source for dt-blob.bin) you will find pins assigned to the role LAN_RUN. By default it is "absent" for a CM3 but you could set it to be GPIO27, configure it with suitable polarity, and let the firmware manage the reset.

You said you had included the last lines of the boot messages (which is the same kernel log as dmesg would show), so just include them all. Add "loglevel=8" to /boot/cmdline.txt to see all messages.

Thanks for the direction for the LAN_RUN pin.

One more question about dt-blob.bin, I assume that if it is not present then a default one is loaded from firmware, I do however am wondering if there is a way to "include" a subset of dt-blob.bin only, so that updates to dt-blob would not be needed when new PI version comes out?

DISREGARD the content below this note as it is not accurate - I made a mistake in the dt-blob source where I deleted a few internal pin definitions which caused the kernel panic and increased current consumption. Redefining dt-blob from original and just defining the [email protected]_RUN as type="external" and number=<27> seems to work.


I redefined LAN_RUN in dt-blob but now there is a kernel panic cycling after boot also current consumption jumped from regular 300mA to over 500mA.

Also if I defined "type" as "internal" for [email protected]_RUN the LAN module is not initialized.
