Very timely article in MagPi68!

Unfortunately WILL NOT WORK on Pi3B+, and there is no warning.

Which makes the MagPi article even more out-of-touch.

I'd guess the article was written in the middle of February before the 3B+ was generally available and the person writing it couldn't possibly know it wouldn't work on a 3B+.

That's journalism for you - always "out of touch".

I might agree if the author hadn't stated "especially with the new faster Raspberry Pi 3B+".

Wait a couple of weeks until the Mate Ubuntu maintainers have written the code to fix it.
unfortunately at this time you fall between two stools.
I might agree if the author hadn't stated "especially with the new faster Raspberry Pi 3B+".
yeah, the journo probably knew the 3B+ existed, but forgot that it would take a couple of weeks to get it updated for the newer PI (as always happens).

It hasn't been updated in over a year! The downloadable image is 2 system updates behind latest Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

Well, but now there is a real incentive to do an upgrade for them (the maintainers).

I never said choosing Ubuntu over Raspbian was a good idea....
There is almost no difference in what you can do with Ubuntu, and with Raspbian, (they are both derived from Debian) and MATE isn't as lightweight as the desktop environment of Raspbian, so is a poor choice really.
Choosing Ubuntu Mate, because its a familiar choice, isn't a well thought out decision IMHO.

for new users mate provides an easier way to find their way about as until stretch finding devices on a network was very much like an obstacle course and changed with every upgrade or seemed to anyway . I find on a pi 3 that i can install and remove software more easily on mate than raspbian, i have two computers running stretch the little netbook a samsung n130 running the raspberry pi desktop and an old p2 running the fullblown stretch image I386 it dual well treble boots with window 7 and linuxmint. i mostly use the netbook to ssh into other pi's .stretch on the p2 is very impressive slick screen handling and i like the gnome desktop well anyway enough moaning i just enjoy using raspberry pi's
