Requirements for developing for Windows 10 IoT

Wed Aug 19, 2015 9:32 am

Hello,

I am having trouble to find out what is required to develop for Windows 10 IoT on the RPi2.

First I thought that pushing the image to a SD card from Windows 10 is optional. I used the microsoft provided tool on Windows 7 and failed. After some searching I found a way to push the image on the SD card from Windows 7 - but now further questions came up, to which I can't find a definitive answer.

1. I want to develop Python applications for Win10 IoT. Many guides say that I need Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition to do so. VS2015 Community supports Python. But doesn it have to be the Community Edition - is it a must? Or would the Express Edition suffice?
2. And must the IDE run on Windows 10? Or doesn't it matter from this point on since the image is already on the SD card?
3. Though VS2015 supports Python I am not sure whether this applications can be run on the RPi2 with Win10IoT. Can they?

Thank you.

The "Community" edition is the new upgraded name for the "Express" edition. You will need vs 2015.

VS 2015 will run on Windows 8 and above.

As far as whether your application will work goes. It depends on what it does. Windows 10 core IoT has a long way to go to get everything working on a RPI. They also have very different opinions about how things should be done, and in what order features will be made available.

I have yet to find a roadmap. I only know what I see in the release notes and can glean from the various blogs I find.

This MS WebSite has all the information you need, but basically you need

RPi2B and Class 10 SD Card

Windows 10 Desktop Edition on your x86 machine (version 10240 or later)
VS2015 any version
