It's free as in zero cost. It's not free as in what you can do with it.

Jtanner if an IoT device is created will it need a Windows 10 PC to communicate with / administer the device ??

You can connect to a device over a remote powershell connection, or via a web browser using http://<ip address>

Is it a requirement for all Windows 10 IoT Core devices? No.

Some designs might benefit from having a PC involved, so it really depends if that's how you want to administer the devices.

As for updates, the exact details are being worked out but I do not expect you'd have to connect a device to a PC to apply updates but some of this will also be up to the OEMs as they build / design the device. More of this will be clarified further as we get to release.

I just tried to launch the Windows_IoT_Core_RPI2_BUILD installer supplied by Microsoft. It requires Microsoft Visual Studio Ultimate, Premium or Pro to run it. "Express" version is expressly excluded. So, do I you to spend $1199 to join this program?

Also it’s my understanding that development for Windows 10 IoT Core will be supported / available as part of VS 2015 Community Edition, which will be free. (Kind of a replacement for the individual express editions). So no price barrier to entry even at RTM.

Hi Heater,

At the moment to start developing for Windows 10 IoT Core on a ‘blank’ PC you would want to follow the steps listed here:

Since the OS and all tools are currently technical previews there is no cost to use them currently.

After RTM, then the only part that I believe you might need to purchase would be a copy of Windows 10 for your desktop system. Please note however that if you currently own Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 then the upgrade to Windows 10 should be free during that first year. You might also be able to use those existing versions, but not all of the development features would continue to be available.

The VS 2015 Community Edition should be free, and using and developing for Windows IoT Core is free for non-commercial use.

Looking on Amazon.com it appears that you can purchase a new version of Windows 8.1 for around $115.00 US as of today. Other than the upgrade being free from existing versions I am not aware of what the pricing will be for Windows 10 when it is released. That should be announced in the next few months.

If you are going to use Windows 10 IoT Core for yourself for non-commercial use then it is free to use. If you intend to create a product and ship hundreds or thousands of units then you should contact Microsoft to discuss pricing. I don’t know what the price range might be, it could continue to be free or there might be a nominal charge of a few dollars per runtime.
