Info on Windows

Wed May 13, 2015 1:15 pm

Good morning,
we are from NEOS, an Italian society operating in the environmental field. We would be interested in buying Rasberry P2 This is just to enquire some information:

Would it be possible to install Windows on Rasberry P2?

If so:
-Which version?
-Where could we find it?
-How much does it cost?
-Do installation tutorials exist?

If no, would it be possible to use Windows through an emulator?

best regards
Stefano

Windows 10 IoT Core is the version that runs on Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It's available for download as a developer preview now. Here are all the details you need to get it running on Raspberry Pi: http://ms-iot.github.io/content/win10/SetupRPI.htm

If you mean Microsoft Windows Desktop / Laptop / x86 Tablet versions then it is not feasible to install on the Raspberry Pi and the Raspberry Pi is not suitable for running Microsft Windows under Emulation.

Windows 3.1 may be feasible under DOSBOX, but a 20 year old Operating System is not much use..

As above stated Windows IoT is a development platform ;)

The Pi2 is a very capable and very cheap computer. There are several versions of Linux available free if charge that are easy to use and work well.

I recommend that you buy a Pi2 and evaluate Raspbian Linux. You can use the full functionality of the Pi2 today.

Microsoft have released something called Win 10 IoT, which is currently at a very early stage of development. It is not like the desktop Windows you are familiar with. If it works you can evaluate it later. It will run on the Pi2 that you buy today.

Ciao Stefano,

Windows 10 Iot (https://dev.windows.com/en-US/iot as mentioned before) is a very elegant way to bring a Windows application to the Raspberry PI 2.
Just try it out, it works very well even in this stage of development and offers a broad range of possibilities.

Regards

Sebastian
