Re: Sense-Hat Problems

Wed Mar 28, 2018 6:01 pm

I recently bought a Sense HAT and tried to put it on a 2014 Raspberry Pi B+. Followed the first few lines to update, install, and reboot. Next was the "from sense_hat import SenseHat" and I get the error message - "from: can't read /var/mail/sense_hat"

Anyone have a clue why I'm getting this message? :?:

Have you used Python before ?

You need to open Thonny or IDLE3 at the Desktop, then create a new Project.
Follow this
https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... -sense-hat

If you are using an old version of Raspbian, I would recommend getting the latest version.
B+ is quite old so you could be on a very old version.

I have a feeling you are trying to enter it all at the Terminal/Command line

First, you should start your own thread.

And second, we need way more info than that? Like what code you are trying to run etc.

I see several other posts here that indicate others are having problems with their Sense Hats. I initially got my sense hat working. But the magnetometer settings were way out. Their ranges did not make any sense. I had a working magnetometer right here and the Sense Hat magnetometer values were completely wrong. Inaccurate and unresponsive. It did not look like a calibration issue, it looked like either a hardware issue or an issue with the supporting software. Also, my temperature probes numbers were simply over 10 degrees out. I calibrated the magnetometer according to the forum posts in the link below and the results did not improve.
viewtopic.php?f=104&t=109064&p=750616#p810193

The second time I calibrated I started getting the error below:
Python 3.5.3 (/usr/bin/python3)
>>> %Run humidity.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/home/pi/Programs/Sense Hat Samples/humidity.py", line 1, in <module>
from sense_hat import SenseHat
File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/thonny/backend.py", line 305, in _custom_import
module = self._original_import(*args, **kw)
File "/home/pi/Programs/Sense Hat Samples/sense_hat.py", line 17, in <module>
from .stick import SenseStick
File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/thonny/backend.py", line 305, in _custom_import
module = self._original_import(*args, **kw)
SystemError: Parent module '' not loaded, cannot perform relative import
>>>

That error has persisted, rebooting did not help, nothing helped.

I will give this one day and then send back my two Sense Hats. My belief is that they are simply not viable as magnetometers. It looks like they worked at one time but perhaps the supporting libraries have changed to the point where they are no longer viable? I will keep my Raspberry Pis and use other magnetometers with them.

Good luck to everybody with their Sense Hats.

Does it work or not in IDLE3 ?
But stick a new topic up.

Hello,
I have had a Raspberry Pi 4 for a while now and i decided to try and get the Sense Hat going on it. The last time I tried it, it was connected to a Raspberry Pi 3. Now when I connect the Sense Hat to the Raspberry Pi 4 2G it will not start at all. The red led starts blinking but no green led activity. The red keeps blinking.
I disconnect the Sense Hat and plug in the power, an official power unit, and it starts right up. is there a problem with these to units together. Seems like it should work fine.

What is going on.

Try adding hdmi_force_hotplug=1 to config.txt

I realise this is not very helpful, but the Sense Hat connected to my RPi 4 2G running Buster with no problems whatsoever.
I didn't need to configure anything. It just worked.

Both of my Pi's/sense hats are running Jessie Pixel as far as I know. On one I did a sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade and some things started acting weird. My sense hat code still worked. I just had other issues. It would boot to the Desktop GUI even though I set it to command line for one thng. That prompted me to leave my Sarkari Result Pnr Status 192.168.1.1 other Pi as is. One is an A+ (256 meg of RAM) and a newer A+ (512meg RAM).
Hello,

First sorry if you spot some mistakes (English is not my native language)

So I have some problem to initialize the sensors (humidity temperature etc) of the sense-hat.

At the begining, I trie to play with the sense in Python 2.7.3 and I got this error message :

" raise OSErrore("Humidity Init Failed, please run as root / use sudo"

After a quick google search I need to : sudo idle3 &

but in this case I use python 3.2.3 and the problem is more drastic here, I can't import SenseHat

error message goes this way : " from PIL import Image # pillow ImportError: No module named PIL"

but I already install pillow for python3 and I can't write some message on the 8x8 LED matrice.

So, What is the best use pyton 2 or 3 ? and how to resolve the problem from one or other version of python.

Thanks
