Sense HAT availability

Sun Apr 26, 2015 10:57 am

The HAT used for the Astro Pi mission is called the Sense HAT. It's a multifunctional board with the following features:
  • 8x8 RGB LED matrix with 16-bit colour resolution (RGB565)
  • ATTiny88 for LED matrix driving with field-flashable firmware
  • 9 degree of freedom MEMS IMU with combined accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer
  • Absolute pressure sensor
  • Combined temperature/humidity sensor
  • 5-way miniature joypad

Details on the Astro Pi mission (part of Tim Peake's Principia mission) can be found at http://astro-pi.org/.

The Sense HAT is currently in limited distribution to schools and educational establishments who have entered the Astro-Pi competition and have either had a commendable entry or have won a class set.

Schools and other educational establishments who wish to enter the competition can email [email protected]o-pi.org to apply for a free HAT. You should provide a good description of what your entry will do for Tim Peake on the ISS. Please note that this will not entitle you to a board though! There are only a limited number available so we will be selecting recipients based on what you write in your application. Choose your words carefully!

We are currently doing the preparatory work needed prior to spinning up volume production: watch this space for updates on commercial availability.

Can't wait to buy this thing! Please keep us posted. I have some Jr. High kids I'm doing Science Olympiad projects with and this is a great addition to our ongoing learning for the kids (and adults).

Can I ask that you make a huge quantity before you put them on sale? I know that I want 3 and I'm thinking another 100,000 people also want more than 1. I understand the entire "cash flow" issue, but as a maker with a project list going "hey, those, I want now" it's hard to get put on the list for shipments in November.

Not sure how the British building society system works, is it easy peasy to pop in and say "hey gov, we are the smashing Pi team, can you loan us a few quid because all our fans will be argy-bargy on the new hat? Then it's Bob's your Uncle and we are all happy? Or do they think this do over of the Beeb computer is a bit dodgy? (I can toss in a few Harry Potter / Mary Poppins / Top Gear slang words if that will help you boffins out)

Love the kit, happy that the lead times are few days not many weeks.

The difficult bit isn't the money, it's how many to make. The board isn't cheap to make - and if you make too many you might lose a lot of money if they don't sell.

So better to start small and increase once demand is known, than to start big and find out its's not as popular as you might have hoped.

Would this be another product going on sale before the DSI display? :-(

No idea. Clearly some delay on the LCD, probably EMC compliance. I've not popped in to Pi towers for a while, so haven't had a heads up.

Start with 10K, of course.... (Sorry...it's a bit of a running gag.)

Hey! I'll have you know that Bob *is* my uncle...well, was, anyway, he's been dead for some time (1908-1990).

That's the 64 million dollar question. We're hoping it will be around £30 but we haven't fixed the supply chain yet so the honest answer is that we don't know. But that's what we're shooting for.

Hi jamesh, I was wondering if a crowd funding option has been considered to gauge interest and to set a bar for a reasonable economy of scale for production?

Absolutely cannot wait for this. I teach MS CompSci in the US, and I think this would be a fabulous intro to programming, robotics, etc. I echo what others said..... make a lot of them. I guarantee they'll sell quickly.

The huge unknown for us is the inherent "Magpie Factor" - with past product releases we've seen huge numbers of upfront orders that dwarf volumes in subsequent months. We'll probably follow the same numbers as with the camera board or Model A release - 10k units on launch (ha) day.

With the right tools, it can--undoubtedly--be made to fit into *any* case, but some cases will be easier than others. I saw a case at the Maker Faire that would be just perfect...but it's not on the market yet.

short answer is from a master machinist I used to know....never use force; just get a bigger hammer.

Looking forward to have this HAT. The "one-stop-shop" approach gives a lot of footprint towards building a very good software base, and that could be the key towards amazing projects.
I've played around with some HATs, and I'm a little disappointed that beyond some Python libraries, the usage is very limited. It shrinks the values of the HATs dramatically, because it makes it very hard to couple the normal functions of Raspbian with sensors and leds present on those boards.
Given the quality and the breadth of the Sense HAT product, that would be a serious game changer.

Please hurry :)

Hi, I am doing a project for a New Zealand competition called IPENZ and we are making a drone with Raspberry Pi. This product is exactly what we need so is it possible to buy one soon, if not ASAP. If this is not possible when will it be released.
Thanks heaps

How about killing two birds with one stone by beginning with taking advance payments for orders for a strictly limited period and only produce for commercial sales orders, say, some months after the initial batch production has been proven successful?

He is still politely waiting for an estimate of when that is now reasonably expected to be, to the best of anyone's knowledge. Should those involved not have a clue, or should they be unwilling to take Raspi users into their confidence, having whetted their appetites in the first place, it would be a helpful thing to say so, don't you think?

For the sake of full disclosure, my involvement in the project is minimal (a few software patches) and I don't stick my nose in the other aspects of the product (much). So I don't have information to share, and if I did, it wouldn't be up to me to share it.

I've typed out a long response, but it's a whole other discussion about pre-announcing announcements of launches. In short, I can understand wanting to know, but I don't think it would be helpful to anyone involved.

If there's a release date in mind and they're ready to release that information, it would've come up prior to somebody asking about it. "Oh right, we forgot to mention, yeah, they're totally going on sale tomorrow. Thanks for reminding us! Whoops!". The very first post says "watch this space for updates", implying that when there's an update, you'll see it.

If it's earlier in the production cycle, take a look at every kickstarter project ever, AAA game launches and other cases where a launch date is announced too far in advance. You'll find that when people stick to arbitrary deadlines, they either don't deliver what they promise or do the responsible thing and push the date back further until the product is actually ready, leaving people disappointed either way. Then there's the really responsible thing and that's to not give a date in the first place, focus on releasing the best possible product and only when it's ready. Even when they're 100% transparent, the updates get very boring and along the lines of "still working on the thing I've been working on for the past 5 weeks" or "still waiting for some person outside of the company to do their thing" until nobody cares and the whole thing runs out of steam. The big and interesting updates are actually rare, and again, would come up before someone asks. You've set up a false dichotomy when in reality, there are many more options. There could be other practical and legal reasons why it wouldn't be a good idea to blurt stuff out on the forum.

If you want to have a discussion on the merits of different release strategies and what information you're entitled to prior to the release, then that we can have a different thread for that. But let's not derail this particular thread, which isn't about that.

Thank you.

This thread's title is Sense HAT availability. It is NOT about the philosophy of failures of vapourware in the USA and elsewhere or personalities. The schools competition has evidently passed its advertised date for entries and it seems reasonable to assume that the project development has well passed the time of the posting of images of the HAT on the internet and its proclaimed association with Raspi. This reportedly has potentially generated further interest in the HAT many times exceeding that of the initial projections of sales of Raspi itself.

Previous Raspi-associated projects have managed to keep forum members informed of progress and availability, and there is a sufficient plethora of these for Raspi forum fans to come to think it reasonable that anyone associated with publicising the Raspi association with such matters should accept the chore of spending a very few minutes maintaining the interest they deliberately set out to generate in the first place. It is easy to read disinterest into satisfying nascent demand should this continue to fail to be done.

Nature abhors a vacuum and the law of unintended consequences may soon divert previous interest in other directions, with rival projects quickly arising to satisfy expressed demand from frustrated putative users of the Sense HAT. Such is the reality of life.

Model B+, Model A+, Pi2B, "official" case... Which of those were given advanced notice of when they'd be made available?
