question about ssd drives usb 3 and pi3b

Sun Apr 02, 2017 5:27 am

I know that usb 3 is backwards compatiable with 2.. I want to take a 120gb ssd hard drive and get an enclosure for it to use as a swappable drive for media.. does anyone know if an ssd drive would have power issues on the pie 3b+ ?

USB 3 enclosures work from 2 USB 2 ports or one USB 3 port. The Pi 3 ports are wired together and can run one USB 3 disk.

Some USB 3 enclosures have faulty USB 3 - SATA chips. You have to know then USB ID for the USB part of the chip to find out if it works with Linux. Google the brand, model, and linux before buying.

If it's only a single ssd then a usb2 socket on the Pi3 "should" power it without a hub. (Though your millage may vary depending on the make of SSD and it's power requirements.)

I've had a single SSD in a USB3 enclosure running of a single USB2 socket on my Pi3. but had to move to a powered hub for more than 1 External drive (usb2 or usb3).
