Cheapest wifi usb dongle for pi3 model B

Thu Jan 12, 2017 12:39 am

Hi to all! I love raspberry and I am managing 9 of them, dreaming to became an expert and manage hundreds of them.
After installing these few, I discovered that the internal wifi is wonderful, but the antenna is too much little and weak, and oftne it don't find normal wifi signal. Now my question is: which is the cheapes usb wifi dongle compatible with raspberry? Because I would be happy to pay few more euro (and not 15-30€ for a super-gun antenna) and power up the wifi signal of my lovely raspberries :-)

There's no need to replace the 9 Pi3 - dtoverlay=pi3-disable-wifi will be in future firmwares, and you can blacklist the modules for now.

Are you any good at surface mount soldering? Have a look at this, http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/qu ... -to-a-pi-3

Just giving idea's alternatives. You can get the connectors here, https://www.adafruit.com/products/1661 for less than a buck each. They also have the cables and antennas to go with them. https://www.adafruit.com/products/852 I can understand why you wouldn't want to go that route though. You need the skill and resources to modify the boards.

You get what you pay for by the way. Go too cheap on your dongle and you may find the range isn't any better than what you have now. I've used these in the past with my 2B's. https://www.adafruit.com/products/1030 Good range and they work out of the box, plug and play with Raspbian. No drivers of file edits required.

I know people are offering solutions but before I am say what to go for, what is the distance to router from the various pi's? Also screening like walls etc in the way, possible other obstacles could also be affecting the signal,

Nothing special, I just need a normal wifi, because the basic raspberry wifi antenna is very weak about the distance for my experience. I experienced 9 raspberry with wifi and when distance was more of 5-10 meters without walls (or other obstacles) from the wifi bridge or router, I was starting then ot have troubles, instead with normal smartphones it was all right.
If I was needing a super antenna I was asking for that, I just need one normal and cheap, because need to buy it multiple times for multiple raspberry..

That helps a lot, Maybe just a booster antenna on the Wi-Fi hub. the logical solution in my book would be buy one dongle at the price you would be prepared to pay for each unit and try it.
That way you would not loose out too much if not sucessfull

Thanks! the wifi hub has already 2 big antennas or 3... For now I patched with a LAN cable rj45 to 7 of the 9 raspberry, and the other 2 are at about 5 meters and never has problems of wifi signal. but people with normal smartphones at 15 meters never have instead problems with wifi signal..

Hi everybody,

I'm posting here because I had the same exact dilemma some days ago and I found an amazing 4G based solution

After reading guides on usb_modeswitch, sakis, wvdial I saw that usually Huawei modems were the ones with more support pages from the forums and tutorials, so this helped me in choosing the brand. The choices I could do here in Australia were E3372 with Optus and E8372 with Telstra. I picked up this last one because my company had already a Telstra SIM available

I was literally impressed by the easy setup of this device. First I plugged it on Windows 10 [just to check if it was working in general] and after on Raspbian Jessie running on Raspberry Pi 3. At the very beginning I did a firmware upgrade on Windows through the modem home page and after it worked straight away on both platforms. The zero configuration on Raspberry Pi 3 was over expectations, as I said before I read on multiple blogs that there is a lot to do to make them work on this platforms, even with other devices from the same brand

Unfortunately Telstra doesn't indicate clearly at all the model, you don't even know what you are buying. I could see that it was this device from product code thanks to the shop assistant and cross-checking with the image online. For people without codes if you want to buy this E8372 wingle you will find TPREPAID 4GX USB+WI-FI PLUS WHT 3GB out of the telco box. If you slide the modem lid there is an additional name spec which is fully featured as E8372h-608. Power consumption is 750mA from the booklet, so basically in line with other devices

SIM size to make it work is a full SIM [2FF] so if you are in the situation where you have already a Telstra SIM better to find a SIM adapter before

Overall: excellent, highly recommended

Hope this can really help

Have a good day mates,
Antonino

Can you define Zero Configuration, did you use 3g configuration in Pi or just WIFi option from E8372 and connectd Pi to Wifi? Does dongle works connected directly to PI?

I'm trying to make, a 3g/4G videosurvailance with Pi Zero W and USB modem. For now i have it connected through MiFi, but i don't like the fact, that Mifi's battery should be on charge all the time. Pi Zero then uses OpenVPn to connect home and i can see him like local network device.
