I have just tried that mini mic with pocketsphinx on my Pi 3 - it seems to work just as well as my Kinobo noise cancelling uni-directional mic - 95% or better with small language model (trained on 105 phrases using 136 words). As an alternative, you could use a GPIO add on with built in microphone.

I guess that you will find many app's for your need to detect open-sesami like simple voice rather than recognition of normal speech to control home appliances with ease although I don't know such programs in specific.

From what I understand wit.ai operates on a simple REST API, which I think should not be too hard to get working if you have a wifi module and access to the internet.
To get the voice recognition working, though, I would give Jasper (https://jasperproject.github.io/) a try and tie it up with wit.ai
