Why not just run a DC wall jack that outputs ~12v and around 1.5A or better (most external HDD power supplies are of this spec) From there, put a UBEC right next to the Pi set to 5.1 ~ 5.25v and either power over the GPIO power pins, or make your own microUSB plug (a little tricker and part quality ...
