Use the GUI PiClone program which will copy an SDCard to a bootable copy (in a USB reader).

The main changes are 1) hostname 2) fixed IP address (if used).

picopy ("piclone") isn't the same as dd dd is a direct byte for byte copy - so resulting .img would be huge, and also can't copy to smaller sd cards piclone first sets up partitons, then does a file based copy - so can move a ...

... grab a USB SDCard reader. First run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade on your RPi3B. Make sure it boots ok after that. Then use the PiClone program on your RPi3B to write a new SDCard for your RPi2B. If that doesn't boot on your RPi2B you probably have a faulty RPi2B.

Since we don't know what you're trying it is next to impossible to tell you what's wrong as most of our crystal balls went offline in the "Great Crystal Ball Disaster" of 1989.

The Raspbian GUI has a "piclone" program that should do what you want.

Get a USB SDCard reader and use your Raspberry Pi booted from the class 4 card to run piclone to clone the working card to your broken class 10 card. Honestly, that was the first thing I did... was clone the original SD and then restored it to this new SD... no go! ...

... is stored in the Pi -- there is nowhere to put it that survives a power cycle. Just clone the working card back to the damaged one, using PiClone or your favourite SDCard reader/writer. It is possible that the SDCard is damaged, it may or may not be recoverable. It's too late at night ...
