It might be good idea to create some kind of library of free Linux and programming (for beginners) books ripped to mobi format for kindle and pdf for similar devices.
And maybe some sort of downloadable offline reference site (similar to android docs)...

E Ink displays are really great for text applications, but they kinda peter out in usefulness when it comes to graphics and, as you alluded to, they\'re really expensive. Just about the cheapest way to get one is to buy a kindle off amazon and use their screen :P

I think it makes more sense to just go for a cheap, rootable/hackable Android tablet with USB and LAN/Wifi, dispensing with the Pi ?

... As I stated in the OP purchasing a 30 LCD controller board takes the project out of the worthwhile price range (I'd be better off just buying a kindle straight out). There might be some other way to interface to an LCD laptop screen, but I'm not aware of it (yet)</t>

Cheapest source of E-Ink displays is actually Tesco's. You do have to dismantle the Kindle they are in to get them though.
