Since this has been necro'd, some points... 1. You don't need to use WD installtion procedures or anything else. You ca put an image on a PiDrive with 'dd", then update /boot/cmdline.txt to point to the correct partition for root. It's better to use the Etcher image writing software, and Raspbian ...

... then you'll need to find a compatible device, and I recommend an SSD, since they don't have the spin-up time or power issues. There is also the PiDrive from Western Digital (a USB HDD specially made for the Pi computers).

... shutdown, disconnected, swapped in the Pi3B+ (in place of the Pi3B I've been using), reconnected everything and the Pi3B+ booted right up...from a PiDrive. Probably the fastest boot of a new Pi from box opening to running system I've ever done.
