Re: Attempting to port Minecraft (Client!) to the Raspberry

The main issues are lack of accelerated Xorg and lack of OpenGLES compatibility in Minecraft. Another issue is my laziness :D

Re: Attempting to port Minecraft (Client!) to the Raspberry

Hmm. I don't think this is gonna work. Minecraft especially requires very much RAM to work, as java does itself.

Good luck anyway.

Raspberry Pi logo in Minecraft

... issue 117 of Linux User & Developer and on page 46 they had this beautiful pixelized RasPi logo, so I thought I'd try out some pixel art in Minecraft (Xbox 360 version). Unless I messed up somewhere it should be an exact duplicate of the one from the magazine. Here's how it turned out: pi ...

Re: Attempting to port Minecraft (Client!) to the Raspberry

First things First. Change to an older version on minecraft. Minecraft needs at least 1gb of ram to run and the PI doesn't have that kind of resources. Try porting over Minecraft Classic, it uses only 500mb of ram... but it does need 1.6GHz processing ...

Have you heard of minetest c55? It's a lot like minecraft but runs on much worse hardware. You can take a look? :)

Re: New Pi with 512MB RAM - Minecraft now possible?

I doubt that Minecraft will ever properly work. :( but, however, maybe the pocket edition is possible? I have seen it running smoothly on a lot less than a 700mhz, 512mb Pi! We might be able to get it if a stable version of Android ...

Re: New Pi with 512MB RAM - Minecraft now possible?

What about the server? I know that was possible before, but would take a really long time to 1. Generate the world, and 2. Start the server.

What was the bottleneck before? I'm thinking it was RAM...

Re: New Pi with 512MB RAM - Minecraft now possible?

Re: New Pi with 512MB RAM - Minecraft now possible?

xranby is doing work on LWJGL and you could look at C clones.
AFAIK Minecraft runs on the Pi , but as long its not packaged into the repos only
one person can prove it. Raspbian has no non-free repo anyway.

... does not help. Looks like I'll have some portin' to do! How exactly are you doing this, tinkering to optimise a java VM? Well, I'll need to port Minecraft to OpenGL ES. I'll probably have to do some stuff with lwjgl to make it play nice with the videocore gpu the rpi uses. All I need now is motivation! ...

Porting of the LWJGL Java library to the Raspberry Pi

... up using mesa software rendering fallback on the Pi and this is slow, no GPU hardware acceleration at all. You can make applications/games like Minecraft boot up to the title screen using this version of LWJGL but it will be slow, slide-show slow. Ok then moving on, we will have to compile LWJGL ...

Re: Attempting to port Minecraft (Client!) to the Raspberry

Well...

It's hard to say! Overclocking should improve your performance but having to great an overclock can affect it... Try a lower one (maybe 800mhz?) and inform us of the results!

I've overclocked it to 1Ghz... should I try a lower clock?
