Well if bad comes to worst you could just get that solar panel kit and build a step up converter for cheap. I have a LM2577 based step up dc converter around here that costs like ~5€ to build, even less if you can scrounge some connectors and order some samples.

The problem with vdpau is that it's support is practically non existent unless you use nvidia products, a better alternative would be vaapi. Unfortunately the best option right now is to use vlc as a backend, gstreamer is usually much slower than the rest.

The first thing i'll be using this is as a video streaming client. I have a atom powered server that has vlc streaming multiple channels/streams and each RPi board will act as a client to said server.
