Re: Wearout Prevention of SD card memory

Assuming the ability to do so, simply backing up your SD card(s) regularly will allow trivial recovery from a failure. I fully intend to save an image of my main 32GB SD card every week and certainly after I've done anything major with respect to Pi software configuration. If the SD card fails, yank...

Might be more informative to do "ls -l /home/HELL" to confirm it's really called that with nothing hidden in the name.

Re: very faint text in forum

You can switch to board style "Prosilver" I just tried that and saw no usable improvement, though the style of the board changed to match what Ive seen many other places. One apparent difference was an almost-invisible "change font size" widget in the upper right that may help the OP. [I'm back to ...

Do you have any good recipes? I've got some spare pebbles in the back garden. Why, yes, I do - here's one variation a quickie Google Search found: http://www.dltk-teach.com/fables/stonesoup/mtale.htm Note, however, that I seem to remember the variation that had three soldiers but this one will do. ...

Re: SD card partition overlap

Note one thing - I took a NOOBS 8GB SD card, booted from it, allowed it to do its thing, THEN copied THAT changed image to my Windows PC and onto the 32GB SD card, then repartitioned THAT. I did NOT place a virgin NOOBS image on a 32 GB card and try to boot from that. That may be problematic in and ...

Re: SD card partition overlap

Trying reader on pi next Yes, using the Pi exclusively (except for the initial imaging of the 8GB card which I did on a windows machine with Win32DiskImager) works fine for repartitioning the 16GB SD card. I just within the last few days resized the partitions on a 32GB SD card that had an 8GB imag...

Equal rights for vegetables, that's what I say! Every time you eat vegetables you kill a plant! Though you're joking, of course, some of us out here are satisfied with our omnivorism simply because we really do not see any difference in The Grand Scheme of Things between a plant, an animal, or a ro...

Re: GPIO Simple Button

After you have devised the hardware side of hooking up a simple switch/button to the Pi, remember that electronics "see" things that we do not because they react so fast. In particular, switches "bounce" when you activate them - they LITERALLY bounce, making and breaking electrical contact numerous ...

Re: Android Tablet as Simple Monitor

I admittedly have not tried it, however the X Window system has a DISPLAY variable that determines where to, at least, display output. Googling for that, etc, may be fruitful. Possible problems are (1) Android doesn't do X (I have no clue), (2) the Pi simply doesn't have the power/size, (3) configur...

I went to plug my class 10 8GB SDHC card into my laptop (after taking it out of my Pi) and it was registered in two parts. But that is not all, the capacity only sums up to just over 2GB! Yes, that's the standard size. I believe you can use "raspi-config" to resize it to the full 8GB. [however, I d...

Can anyone give me a clue as to how to get started on such a project? Your post actually reads like you have a good handle on this. Connected 1 TB WD MyBook Essential drive ... Now Disk Activity light never stops blinking. Nothing is being written to disk and there is nothing to read from the disk either There's "never" and there's "never". Perhaps the Pi is fscking the drive. For a terabyte and a 700MHz processor, that might t...

Always simplify the test environment. Make the computer room TV totally standalone with the Pi - then do your thing. If the other TV(s) still behave strangely you "know" it isn't Pi related. If the other TV(s) calm down, then you know something about your prior connectivity broke things. Rethink tha...

The interfaces line is "dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4"; it is part of the iface section (stanza?).

Resolv.conf may be getting stepped on by NetworkManager...or my memory has failed yet again.

Re: External power on LED?

Get one of those 1970s "fibre optic" lamps. Take some of the fibre bundle and use that to pipe the LEDs on the board to the outside of the case. Yes, that's pretty much what my off-the-shelf case does - it has a bunch of plastic light pipes from the on-board LEDs to the top of the case. Works well.

in fact, I used a Linux with gparted to extend the partitions without [losing] data. W.r.t. to the unusual partition layout where partitions are overlaying each other - did you si...
