Re: 13th May 2016 Changes to the Raspbian Jessie Desktop

When I "sudo poweroff" the Pi3, in contrast to former Raspbians the green (SD?) LED really turns off after some blinking, leaving only the red power LED on.

That's nice.

Re: 13th May 2016 Changes to the Raspbian Jessie Desktop

Is it possible to disable Wlan and Bluetooth on a Pi3 with this new Raspbian release? Or do I still have to use the previous apporach which works well but is uneasy to handle: /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf # Wlan blacklist brcmfmac blacklist brcmutil # Bluetooth blacklist btbcm blacklist hci_...

Thanks Fruitoftheloom, now the download page does allow to download the new version indeed.

Anybody already did an "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" ?

Re: 13th May 2016 Changes to the Raspbian Jessie Desktop

Is the new Raspbian image already on the download page? I only see the older Raspbian image from March 2016. Same with sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade … list zero updates for me so far. Is there a command to see if the Pi runs the recent Jessie? I know "uname -a", however it lists the ...

Pidgin network trouble since a few days?

With an up-to-day version of Raspbian running a Pi3, I use the apt-get installed Pidgin IM client in order to connect to some other Pidgin friends using an XMPP account (Jabber protocol). It worked well for months but since some days, after I start Pidgin it doesn't automatically connect to a server...

Re: Wifi/Wlan-GUI on Pi3's Raspbian & XFCE desktop?

The Pi Foundation documentation named Wireless mentions Raspbian's standard Wifi GUI, but it seems this does only work with the LXDE desktop? Unfortunately the actual command which shows the Wifi icon in LXDE isn't mentioned, otherwise I would have tried it in XFCE. The documentation says: In older ...

A Pi3 with current Raspbian OS and added XFCE desktop with "apt-get install", i.e. no external packages. Does anybody know how to get the official Wifi GUI running on such a Raspbian with XFCE desktop system? Another poster can't Wifi connect his Raspbian & Xfce , but I'd like to know if it's possib...

Pi3's Raspbian + XFCE: Wifi GUI ?

Unfortunately I can't help yet, because so far I don't even see a Wifi icon in the XFCE system tray. How did you get it?

For an out-of-the-box Raspbian + XFCE installation on the Pi3, I started a new thread here: Wifi/Wlan-GUI on Pi3's Raspbian & XFCE desktop?

Yes, thanks for these lines! /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf #wifi blacklist brcmfmac blacklist brcmutil #bt blacklist btbcm blacklist hci_uart Will do that. Then how do I find out if it worked? Is there some LED or other means to see if the Wifi and Bluetooth hardware is active? (Like one some...

Re: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on Raspberry Pi 3

You could run Ubuntu Mate on your Pi2 and Pi3, which uses Ubuntu's ARM apt-get repository: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ I did test this recent Ubuntu (Mate) 15.10 on the Pi3 and it worked fine, even with the Xubuntu desktop apt-get installed. Probably also Ubuntu Mate 14.04 LTS from an arc...

Re: Pi3 incorrect results under load (possibly heat related)

At the moment we're just gathering information of what helps. Eventually the plan will be that the frequency/voltage is adjusted as appropriate based on temperature and load. Just out of interest (and I am no Kernel/Linux expert, just an application programmer) : what part in a Linux system like Ra...

Dougie, then I'd like to say thank-you to your family: to you for your many helpful articles here and elsewhere around the Pi, which my family is enjoying since two years, and to your brother for his work on the Amstrad and Speccy which both I enjoyed for many years. Keep up the good work!

Re: Dougie is 20,000

The raspberry pis have kept me mildy amused since October 2012, it's taken us all back to the early days in the late 1970s / early 1980s when this stuff was all new and mysterious. How true! My twin brother told me Is this the brother who helped bringing the great Amstrad CPC to us (ZX Spectrum) fa...

Re: xfce?

I read somewhere that xfce is meant to be light and fast. Is it? Yes, it is and it runs very fine on the Pi3 and the Pi2, and for XFCE fans like me it also runs on Pi1. :-) Since Raspbian is Debian based, you can "apt-get install" all Debian included desktops like XFCE, KDE, and so on. Thank you MarkTF and Gkreidl for your explanations. Very interesting. (And I forgot to mention next to my throttle-back values, that I have a small passive heat-sink sitting on-top of the SoC. Edited now.) Also I still didn't find a reliable source clarifying the question whether the Broadcom Soc's ...

Re: Pi 3 Overheating Issue?

I've done a one hour job running with 400% CPU, When the temperature reached 80+ C, the RPi started to throttle down and never went beyond 83 C. It was mostly running with a clock speed between 922 and 960 MHz. Is this with a Pi3 inside a case or with a "naked" Pi3 ? I suspect a case, because there...

Re: What to expect (how powerful is the Raspberry?)

And, if I wanted to, is it possible to "boost" the Raspberry with hardware? By enabling for example the alpha-version of the new OpenGL-driver via raspi-config, you'll get a boosted i.e. hardware-accelerated and hence very usable Blender (via apt-get). Compared to the very, very slow software-only ...
