Re: Jessie and XFCE: working nearly?

You can get the same effect (bug) in a pure OpenBox desktop with most or all GTK+3 applications if you select the "Clearlooks" theme. Solution: select another theme (with LXDE you do it with lxappearance). Danke, that sounds well because indeed I use the Clearlooks theme. I'll try your solution soon.

Jessie and XFCE: working nearly?

Like I did with the previous Raspbian version, I wanted to install the XFCE desktop in the new Jessie by simply apt-get installing the XFCE meta package which in turn installs a few dozen packages. And normally this is it. Now with Jessie, XFCE basically works but some applications show "inverted co...

Re: Introduce yourself!

Welcome Robert and congratulations for your good age! It's nice to hear that you too began your computer "hobby" with a good old Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Although being roughly only half of your age, I too began with a Spectrum. So this nice Spectrum truly connects generations – as does the Pi of cours...

Re: SANE Scanner

I've used the Pi as a scan server similar to your case. A Cannon scanner was connected to the Pi via USB cable and the other network Linux machines could call the Pi to scan. What I remember is: * On the Pi the main user had to be in the Linux group called scanner . Then in order for the clients to ...

I'm using "sudo poweroff" on all my Linux machines including the Pi's for a longe time, since ... the command doesn't need parameters and I never could remember the halt and shutdown syntax. ;-)

Re: Raspberry Pi doesn't save files after shutting down

I once saved a corrupted SD card, where the Pi couldn't read from and write to certain sectors, by connecting the SD card to a Linux PC and then entering : badblocks -n -s -v /dev/sdX This reads and writes the sectors several times, sometimes making the bad sectors go away. http://manpages.ubuntu.co...

Re: Ubuntu Mate 15.04 for the Pi² : Hardware Mouse cursor?

So, has anyone examined why ARMv7 Ubuntu Mate's fat applications (like my mentioned Firefox, Thunderbird, Libreoffice, even Geweled) give a visibly smoother user experience than the nice ARMv6 Raspbian on the very same Pi² with the exact same SD card model ? I don't think much investigation has gon...

Re: java games on RPi

You can download from http://www.netbeans.org/ the platform independant Netbeans ZIP file, unpack it and in the console run its starter-script named "Netbeans/etc/netbeans" (Provided you've got Java 8 running, which is bundled with Raspbian, or downloadable somewhere.) Then you can use Ubuntu's soft...

~ community please correct me if I am wrong ~ I don't think the Oracle JVM includes any support for Swing on the Pi. JavaFX however does work. Oh yes, Oracle's Java 8 included with Raspbian (and downloadable from Oracle), is a full J2SE JDK edition meaning it includes every Swing bit and uses X11 t...

Re: Raspberry pi 2 or other SBC ?

Raspberry Pi2. Lots of support, well proven design, lots of development work going on with the OS's, lots of projects out there, lots of blogs, forums etc. You don't get that with most of the other devices. Jeffcai, James is right. The Pi is a gem: not only its hardware, but also its software and i...

Re: Ubuntu Mate 15.04 for the Pi² : Hardware Mouse cursor?

Thanks Fruitoftheloom for the clarification. It's a bit complicated to see through... Juxt going to an ARMV7 compile won't make much of a difference - Foundation Tests shows little or no improvement. UNLESS the apps you are using use NEON or are multithreaded, in which case you can get big speedups....

Different speed of ARMv6 and ARMv7 Linux images

Yep it is an upgraded version of Ubuntu 14.04LTS CLi Base..... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi This is a community-maintained image, and is not supported by Ubuntu. The 3.13 kernel has been replaced with an updated 3.18 kernel which is not guaranteed to receive security updates the same as ...

re HW cursor. I didn't manage to get the HW code accepted in to the mainline turbofb driver, the author is pretty slow at things (ie months to respond). Ubuntu Mate 15.04 for the Pi² : Hardware Mouse cursor?

Since a short while Ubuntu Mate is an official Ubuntu flavour and there's a fine 15.04 image read to run on our lovely Pi2 which can also be downloaded via Raspberry Pi's download page . So next to the excellent Debian based Raspian we now also have an Ubuntu based distribution on our Pi (now again ...
