Re: Grandmother with a RPi2

You can download Ubuntu (Mate) 15.10 for the Pi2 here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/ It's Canonical's Ubuntu for the ARM7 plus Raspbian's kernel (I believe) and some Raspbian drivers. All in all it looks and works like Ubuntu 15.10 with all the same software packages. Firefox runs well, but...

Re: Why so old software versions using apt-get?

You could download and install Ubuntu (Mate) 15.10 from here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

It has got the same application versions as standard desktop Ubuntu 15.10 has, i.e. they're usually newer than Debian including Raspbian.

There is a voice over IP program but you may need to get your friends Raspberry Pi! :-) The link is http://uelastix.com/# (u)elastix, asterisk, RasPBX etc are VoIP PBXs. They are NOT VoIP clients. The Gajim GTK+-based Jabber client is also supposed to work with Google Talk ;) Thanks . And it is sup...

Re: Raspbian Jessie Vs. Ubuntu MATE on the Pi 2

Users who're used to an Ubuntu desktop PC, will find Ubuntu (Mate) for the Pi² to be amazing indeed – it actually feels like a full-grown Ubuntu desktop machine, but just so much smaller and hence handier. Typical desktop applications do run faster on Ubuntu compiled for ARM7, compared to Raspbian c...

In italy we are far ahead http://www.conrad.it/ce/it/product/1406729/512-MB-senza-sistema-operativo?ref=searchDetail Blimey, that's a lot. Indeed, ~44€ is a lot for a Pi Zero . Apparently Conrad's Italian branch buys the Pi Zero in Germany for ~15€ and then has to cross the Alps – including the fam...

Re: Raspberry Pi Zero pricing in Europe

I agree with Mikognn concerning the Pi Zero's current cost: 14,95 € here in Germany . So, as usual, there's usury with those who already have a few Pi's to sell. Clearly we better do what Gkreidl said: wait until they really have it in stock in quantity. But those who don't wait or don't know the or...

Well, don't believe anything our governments tell us officially. Compare for yourself what your bread cost ~15 years ago in DM in contrast to what your bread costs today in Teuro. Then we see the actual inflation which is more like 24%. :-)

Re: Serious HDMI Problems. What's that smell? Burning Raspbe

The mentioned VicTsing active converter works fine with the Pi1 (B) and Pi2. That's great. In order to hear audio from the Pi's jack-socket while the VGA-converter is plugged-in the Pi's HDMI socket, hdmi_ignore_edid_audio=1 is useful. See config.txt help page. So with a bit of luck it could also wo...

Thank your for your detailed answer, Mahjongg. Read the comments on the site, there are several positive comments about using it with a PI. Re: Serious HDMI Problems. What's that smell? Burning Raspbe

So, an active HDMI to VGA convertor (like this VicTsing one) should work for a Pi2, I suppose? Still, Dranoweb had problems with his Pi1 B+. Isn't the video hardware part of the Pi1 B+ very similar to or the same as the Pi2 ? And what would happen if I connected my Pi1 (model B rev2) to this VicTsin...

Re: Raspbian not Working (Ubuntu is Ok)

Sounds like some incorrect settings in your "/boot/config.txt" file concerning your VGA monitor. This file is used at boot time by the Pi "BIOS" before the OS is being loaded. I've got a DVI monitor, and Raspbian works out of the box, but Ubuntu 15.10 showed a black screen because of not sutiable se...

Or simply rip all of those parameters out and let your RPi and your TV negotiate their best possible display resolution. Yes, this worked fine for me and a DVI monitor connected with the Pi via a HDMI to DVI cable: I had to comment out all lines, otherwise black monitor. So now because of video app...

You can get the same effect (bug) in a pure OpenBox desktop with most or all GTK+3 applications if you select the "Clearlooks" theme. Solution: select another theme (with LXDE you do it with lxappearance). Danke, that sounds well because indeed I use the Clearlooks theme. I'll try your solution soon.

And normally this is it. Now with Jessie, XFCE basically works but some applications show "inverted co...
