Which video output module did you select?

Recommended is "MMAL X11 Splitter"

Re: VLC hard crashes

I just spent several hours trying different file types and decoder options. Very frustrating to see some behave nearly perfect in certain areas but fail miserably elsewhere. For example MMAL X11 plays MP2 with few artifacts but must exit full screen to do even basic navigation. Other choices like M...

Re: boot-loader queries

... Unfortunately, many of the instruction guides for manually configuring a Raspberry Pi to boot a USB device via an SD card (such as STICKY: HOWTO: Move the filesystem to a USB stick/Drive ) took a 'quick-and-dirty' approach and only placed the ROOT partition on the USB device. ... Re: VLC hard crashes

Latest version (....rpt2) definitely needs to add CMA=512M Can you confirm what you are doing? e.g. Pi4, fkms, hdmi resolution and resolution/bit depth of video being played. You do need a decent amount of cma for 4K video (especially 10-bit). If you need that for 1080p video then that would be mor...

the latest update didn't fix the serious vlc issue on Pi4 4GB

I'm also running VLC on a RPi 4B/4G and experience none of your problems.

Re: STICKY: HOWTO: Move the filesystem to a USB stick/Drive

Unfortunately, the directions in this thread creates a non-standard Raspbian partition layout (which means it almost certainly won't be usable when the Raspberry Pi 4 has native USB capability). As such, it cannot be used with usb-boot either. This tutorial serves exactly what it was supposed to do...

Re: VLC hard crashes

Latest version (....rpt2) definitely needs to add
CMA=512M
to /boot/cmdline.txt (all on one line!)

Otherwise you will get a lot of "not enough main memory" errors when switching between window and full screen mode while using the MMAL X11 splitter video output.

Re: Problems since recent vlc update

.... Do you know where I could find the Foundation version? I have searched for several hours but I can't find it. I tried to build 3.0.8 (19 Aug 2019) from http://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/3.0.8/ but this had the same high-CPU problem. Perhaps I didn't do it right, I'm relatively new to th...

Re: Problems since recent vlc update

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 running Buster and a Raspberry Pi 3 running Stretch. Both have a Pi TVHat fitted. In the last few days both have had serious over-heating issues. On both vlc has failed. to work properly with live TV videos freezing while the sound came through properly. I tried mplayer on t...

Re: Extreame screen tearing on Raspberry Pi 4

So, I gave the compton compositor a try. And yes, it does "fix" the screen tearing issue on my Pi 4. But it seems to reduce overall screen drawing performance. Dragging windows feels a little laggy. Video playback seems a little laggy and perhaps even dropping frames... So, I think I prefer leaving...

Hello! Happened to me as well after updating my old rpi3b(no plus) this morning. I immediately noticed that video settings changed slightly. Re: VLC hard crashes

In the meantime, a bunch of updates for vlc were released, and this is the effort: - VLC works as it did on the pi4/2GB and is still on strike with my pi4/4GB - on my 3B+ it shows a slideshow now instead of a video - on my 2B (1st version) it shows no picture anymore on the 3b* and the 2 vlc was fl...

Do not upgrade VLC [solved]

Today a new VLC version appeared in the Raspbian repository (3.0.100+deb10u1). This version does not contain the RPi-specific patches! Do not upgrade to it! The maintainers of the Foundation repository should care about the problem. A new version was anounced recently so it seems to be the right tim...
