Re: Permission issue

Bummer. I think I'll install XBian instead of raspbmc if I have to reinstall, I heard that that isn't so heavily modified. Lob0426, where will it ask for a password? At the moment I'm stuck with the black screen, I removed the added line in cmdline.txt so it's back to its defaults, but it keeps tryi...

Re: Permission issue

I added the line "init=/bin/sh" to cmdline.txt, put the card back in the Pi and started it up. It wants to start XBMC (but, of course, can't), but when I "press esc to enter terminal" a black screen appears, with once in a while some giant colored squares. Of course I did something wrong here, but w...

Re: Permission issue

Aha, that's where things went wrong I guess. I was trying connecting using sftp but I couldn't get it to work. My next idea was to change permissions... I won't do it again! When I find the time I will reinstall everything to make sure all the permissions are correct once again. What do I need to do...

Re: Permission issue

Thanks for all the replies. Fortunately I only installed Raspbmc, so I guess reinstalling the Pi wouldn't be such a hassle if I make a backup of raspbmc. DougieLawson: of course there is no reason why I would destroy my system. As I wrote: I'm completely new to Linux. My thought was: "I need to writ...

Re: Permission issue

I cannot do that because:

Code: Select all

sudo: unable to stat /etc/sudoers: Permission denied
sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting
sudo: unable to initialize policy plugin

Re: Permission issue

That doesn't do anything, but I think that makes sense: I have closed the terminal in between.
Can't this be fixed by using a safe mode or something? As I said, linux is not my cup of tea...

Re: Permission issue

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it was :

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 664 -R /etc
The current permissions are 664 as far as I can see (using an ftp program).

EDIT: just checked it, that was exactly the command I used.

Permission issue

Hi all, First of all: I'm new to using Linux based systems, so I might not understand everything. I tried to upload something to the /etc folder, but I couldn't get it to work. Somehow I lost my permissions to access this folder, and when I start the terminal (PuTTY) I get this message: -bash: /etc/...
