Re: First impression

My nephew knew how to get to cbeebies to play games online at 4, he's nearly 8 and I'm expecting him to popup on facebook/twitter anytime soon ;) My eldest's first two recognised words at the age of two were 1) their own name 2) "LOADING." Yes. We had dial up... A few years on and one of my other c...

Mine would. I'm currently up to around £20,000 in pre-court-case legal bills... but that's another story.

If you have a decent power supply you may not need that bit. You're by no means the first person to break that part off. It's there to smooth out the input power - but a decent power supply will not necessarily need it. Other people have reported no problems using the board without it. http://www.ra...

Re: Quick question about heat

This is, of course, why you use the "tongue test". It's way more sensitive than a finger tip, and funnily enough, heals faster if you do hit a hot spot. Same principle as using your elbow to test a baby's bath water. Z. Do you only use your elbow because it's so uncomfortable bending over the bath ...

I would prefer Parcel Farce over Shitty Link any time.

They don't even bother to ring the doorbell before shoving pre-written "you were out" through the door. Our "local" depot is over 45 mins each way. The reception area smells like an open sewer.

Well I did wire up my darkroom safe lamp when I was 10. I cut through the twin twisted wire with a pair of scissors when it was still plugged in. Took a good notch out of them. :o You just reminded me of my darkroom wiring age 8 or 9. I managed to wire up my bayonette extension cable taking power t...

Re: Cheap powered USB Hub (UK)

So you’re experience is that the power supply shipped with the H7 is not good enough, right? That's sooo lame. D-Link is supposed to be a quality brand. It's quality in as much as the thing limits the output to 500mA as it should....which means it doesn't properly power the pi withouth a rather exp...

New stuff is always a little scary. Your parts list really helps. Thanks. IDC socket - says "No Longer Manufactured" on Farnell. Clearance item on rapidonline.

resistor - 18 needed, pack of 100
ribbon cable £18.96 for 30M

Hmmm. Would be nice just to be able to buy the bits needed in a little plastic bag (hint hint).

Ahhh - I thought this was just me!

Surely "Shutdown" should umm.... shut down..... and "Logout" should just drop you from desktop to CLI?

Is there a particular reason for not letting the end user go back to the CLI?

I don't do Python, but can't you just grab the command output into a string?:

Code: Select all

import os
x = os.popen('ip -4 addr | grep eth0').read()

I'm planning on purchasing one both to use for regular everyday things As long as you keep your expectations of performance realistic for a very low CPU powered machine with very very little memory everything is fine. It is possible to run a desktop environment and browse the web or write documents...

I'd suggest that there are very few new lonely lost users who would expect to try to ssh to a pi before trying it with keyboard & monitor attached.

If Pi had static IP already assigned it would be a nightmare when brought into school. All the new Pis with the same ip?
