Re: [Tutorial]Use Facebook to control your Raspberry Pi term

Nice. This is very timely information. I was just starting to think about something along these lines for an aging relative. We've just set them up on FB Messenger to chat with various family members - but it takes an age to start up their laptop. I was wondering how difficult it would be to do this...

What would you use to control mains on/off from pi? A commercial rf433 socket?

Re: The Holy war of editors

If I'm on Windows then it's notepad++ all the way. Me too - but it truly sucks with very large files. Search and replace all on a big file on a fast i7 with lots of RAM and it grinds to a near halt. Time to get lunch and see if it's finished before you get back. I have copied large files from Windo...

Re: ArduCAM with Broadcom BCM2835 SoC

Seems totally fair to me. Not everything is free or freely licenced, nor should it be. The cost of development may be interesting but isn't really germane. If the end result is that Arducam or users of Arducam end up having to pay a licence fee to RPF then that can be used to further the aims of the...

I haven't found any actual specs and Anker only says "Thick gauge wiring and reduced cable resistance", but they never state what the actual conductor size is in their Powerline cable. I'm not sure how accurate this listing is - but it appears to have specs: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTAwWDUwMA==/z...

The answer is "Yes you can". Just ensure you're up to date with the patches and it should be fine:

sudo apt-get upgrade

Don't fast chargers use a data negotiation to determine whether they can bump the voltage? The Pi won't respond, so will get 5v

Testing again last night, powering with that buck converter was fine with this stress test. Same time taken to run this as with a 5V 3A rated PSU. No rainbow.

Re: Power supply -- new product?

How is the buck converter in your link working out? pretty reliable? So the input requirements would be a standard 12vdc supply For Pi3B it works, but from time to time the rainbow undervoltage thingumy pops up. When I power through a USB V/A meter it shows a constant 5.03V with power between 0.33A...

Re: Power supply -- new product?

Having a barrel connector and a decent 5V regulator on board isn't a particularly radical idea. It's been there on Arduinio Uno boards and the like in parallel with a USB connection for years with no problem. The circuit could have polarity protection. The argument for adding one has become far stro...

Re: About power supply..

Yes. However be aware that most peoples problems reported here arise over power issues. Here are some pointers: The 2A requirement is probably overkill where you don't have any power-hungry peripherals. Many people are fine running from quality 1.5A or lower rated supplies The rating label on many (...

Not for anything you can play with Kodi that works without it. If you have stuff in the codecs that are covered by the licence they won't play till you re-encode them or buy a licence.

The whole of the in/out debate seemed to me like the "Argument Clinic From Monty Python's Flying Circus" (search for this on youtube) - with John Cleese playing the "out" man.

My children are really annoyed at the outcome. People believed the blatant lies of...

Re: Is the Pi right for my needs?

Depends on the lighting sources and how complex you need it to be. From what you say a Pi would work, but a microcontroller might be a cheaper way to achieve the same thing. If it's "simply" a matter of timing the turn on and off of a few relays then something as cheap as a £1.30 Arduino Nano delive...

Pi has always been a bit of a quirky one - it isn't a great money spinner for Broadcom, but they have chosen to support it, and I for one am very grateful of that. It's probably been the best publicity for a chip manufacturer that I can ever think of. Before the Pi how many people outside the embed...
