I don't see anything wrong with staying with Wheezy. I'm running Wheezy as my main PC system because I didn't like some of the changes in Jessie and I do get security updates.

You can use SD Card Copier to make a copy of the SD card. Upgrading to Stretch is probably a mistake now.

Have you tried it??? It does not boot on mine... How did you do if it worked with you? You are sure you tested it on a RPi 3 Model B? I installed it some years ago on a hard drive and have kept it updated. I don't remember which RPi I used initially but it's running right now on a 3B. You could try...
