Sorry but no, been using Kore since the day i found it, you shouldn't sell you wife short. Just the fact that she will even use Kodi is a win, you should let her try it and see how she what she thinks about the app. My wife can barely use our DVR much less use Kodi.

Not sure about any codex issues, but the best remote i've found by far is the Kore app for Android and iOS.

If you have an old android tablet or phone with and IR transmitter you can make your own universal remote with the right apps

The 3B+ is the only pi with gigabit lan so that would be my choice pi, and if Kodi is the familiar interface then https://libreelec.tv/ is your best bet.
