It must be noted that ARM Kernel Support was added from version 3.7.x, prior to that, like Raspbian a specific Kernel had to be built, the Official Debian Kernels only support ARMv7 not the Pi's ARMv6 afaia. Yes I do like to live with latest and have found that doing so has caused me no issues over the last few days since I started afresh with a new SD Card and Raspbian Image.

Though have not tested Bluetooth as yet with my USB BT2.0 (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)) Dongle.

Quite likely you friend had an Intel x86 CPU / Chipset Mainboard, the Raspberry Pi has an ARMv6 SoC, which is completely different......

If running Raspbian Wheezy latest version check the the Floppy Drive is listed in the File Manager.

In Open Office just undertake a "save as" which will show the file manager, then navigate to the floppy drive.....

It would be interesting if you could try updating with rpi-update to see if you still find your SD cards failing after some time... We've fixed a bunch of bugs recently and they can cause problems... If you run rpi-update (with no parms) now, you'll get the very latest 3.10.18+ (built this afternoon) and it fixes some of the missing driver problems. If it is not recognised by lsusb then no driver will make it work, you may need it plugged into a USB Powered Hub ?
