Re: Pure Python camera interface

I have two R-Pis completely upgraded (sudo apt-get update / dist-upgrade, sudo rpi-update) as of today, with Picamera version 1.8 installed, and they give me two different results with the below code. Both of them run without error, and both save the video file, but one shows timestamps and the oth...

Re: still capture rate (still FPS)

With all due respect, of course -- I don't know for sure. But I don't think the SD card's bandwidth is the bottleneck. I think I have read that the write-speed of the SD card is faster than an internal Pi bottleneck, in capturing information from the camera. I hope a wiz will clarify (or correct me...

Re: still capture rate (still FPS)

Thanks for an insight. I guess I simply may just need to try this out - feed a GPIO input signal of certain frequency and see if shots are dropped or not (simply if all photos were taken or not). If shots are dropped, I may need to go for a lower frequency. I am ready to explore the raspistill sour...

Re: Speeding up capture_continuous over tcp in Python

I've figured out some of what's going on. It seems that in using opencv, it wouldn't display h264 video format. In following the recipe from Dave I was able to view the video. I just changed the viewer I'm using to mplayer instead on vlc. Code from my server: import socket import traceback import s...

Re: Picamera long exposure - really?

Just updated to 1.8 in an upgrade, and leaving all params on auto except set framerate and shutter speed and ISO (not sure if thats even necessary) and gives a very nice night exposure at 6s. But the exif data does not reflect any params if you switch any mode off. Not quite sure I understand what ...

Re: Capture and forward

Mine is a smidge more efficient, but requires detailed knowledge to know that. The opaque format can carry two images. The video encoder needs two images of specific sizes and formats. Coincidentally, the two images the camera produces just happen to be right for the encoder, but it only sends the ...

Re: Developer please come in - Rpi-update slow down capturin

Very odd. As you can see from the commit text, there were a lot of changes in there. I suspect it is probably "OV5647: set restart_drop_frames correctly" or possibly "vc_image/vc_pool: minor fixes for multichannel allocs". However I'm not able to do anything any more without going in to Pi Towers, ...

Re: Speeding up capture_continuous over tcp in Python

Are the commands here telling the server to go to the pi's ip address:port to pull the video stream? If so, would the pi do something like: client-socket = socket.socket() connection = client-socket.makefile('wb') camera.start_recording(connection, format='h264', use_video_port=True) I don't quite ...

Re: Capture and forward

Thanks for the replies! I would estimate that the GPU should have enough grunt for at least a 720P H264 encode stream, but also resizing that down to your QVGA and H264 (or possibly MJPEG) encoding for your stream. You may get away with 1080P if you overclock things. All the component building bloc...

Re: Pure Python camera interface

And picamera 1.8 shuffles into the limelight! Highlights this time are: Several bug fixes, most notably for the old-firmware issues that 1.7 introduced (the mmal_queue_timedwait bug). Arbitrary preview overlays (useful for designing interfaces?) Better annotations including backgrounds and a frame c...

Re: Developer please come in - Rpi-update slow down capturin

Unfortunately I also suspect some sort of slowdown in the recent firmwares. I haven't dug into exactly which one yet but the picamera test suite which used to take about 1.5 hours to run has suddenly started taking 4.5 hours (there's a few extra tests in there but nothing that would justify that kin...

maybe it's that what the rpi foundation says what it should do is not what is does, but they know that in the raspistill command and firmware is modified according to how that works rather than how they publish it should work... bit like microsoft hidden api????? much like the entire establishment ...

Re: Picamera long exposure - really?

Picamera docs:Camera modes Slowest listed frame rate is 1/s. Does Picamera actually support slow frame rates? 1/s would be consistent with the example clock image showing one tick. This issue should be corrected now (ethanol100 very kindly tested the new implementation) and with a bit of luck I'll ...

I'll add my sincere thanks to both JamesH and 6by9 for all their hard work on the camera firmware. I can confidently say my little picamera library wouldn't be half of what it is (or possibly anything!) without their excellent support. I wonder, before you guys ride off into the sunset, if I could b...

Re: Pure Python camera interface

So, when shutter speed is set to 1 second, raspistill takes about 5 seconds to capture an image too, even with a timeout of 1s set . Re: Pure Python camera interface

Raspivid just produces a an H264 elementary stream which doesn't and can't contain timestamps - that is the role of the container (MP4, MKV or the like). The data returned from the GPU does include timestamps, but the raspvid app doesn't include any container code as it would add too many dependenc...
