Re: Raspbmc Distribution now in Beta

Hi Sam Great work! Will this be pushed through as an auto update or should we re-install? No auto update. You can download the Raspbmc beta with updated installer from the link in this thread which may reduce or eliminate the mmc timeouts (they seemed reduced on my Transcend 4GB Class 10). Note how...

Re: Ethernet chip gets raging hot

Watching iPlayer (BBC HD) in Raspbmc and the SoC and USB/LAN chips are [both too hot to touch for more than 5 seconds... is this normal/expected? Any longer than 5 seconds and it really is too uncomfortable (ie. painful) to keep a finger pressed on the surface of either IC (unfortunately I don't hav...

I'd suggest vi (part of the "vim" package) should be installed as standard.

Re: VIA's entry into the low cost computer market

How more complicated is hard to tell, the Flash, RAM, and "BIOS" are all separate and there seems to be separate controllers for LAN, USB and VGA. The rest seem to be for power supply regulation or driver IC's. I couldn't see anything particularly "bizarre" about going that route. The R-Pi is simpl...

Re: VIA's entry into the low cost computer market

I like the price RS Components have confirmed in a tweert that the VIA APC is $49... when ordered in quantities of 10,000. In units of one or two the price probably won't be quite so likeable. As for the VIA APC itself, I think it's a bizarre design that highlights VIAs legacy of designing PCs moth...

Re: HDMI-VGA Adapter with chip GBP 12, free shipping

I have been using the amazon neewer one and it works. Found though with a viewsonic monitor it said it was connected but showed a blank screen. A trick with it I found was to unplug the VGA connector turn on the pi then plug it back in it tricked it into working. Not useful for everyday use. Must b...

Managed to ssh into the pi, all ok, ran the command /opt/vc/bin/tvservice -d edid.dat, Now I've found the file, and when I try to vi edid.dat, I get command not found. I'm running raspbrian, so not sure what editors are available. "aptitude update; aptitude install vim" to get vi. OK, tried opening...

Well, that's obviously a bad pairing, considering the intended purpose of pi is to give everyone a linux pie for programming.. Oh I dunno, In some respects having a not very powerful (I hesitate to call it slow) CPU in an educational environment may be beneficial - if a kid programs a really ineffi...

Didn't boards from the first batch have the CE logo as a sticker on the board (maybe even the cardboard box?), while boards from later batches had the CE logo screen printed on the underside of the PCB?

Re: New PSU... but "repeated keypresses" problem persists

I have occasional repeated key press issues with an Amulet 4si KVM (4 port PS2 keyboard, mouse and video switch) feeding into a keyboard/mouse PS2-to-USB converter that is connected into the R-Pi. The keyboard works OK most of the time, but occasionally the R-Pi appears to lose the "key up" scan cod...

I would warn against anyone following the instructions for the Hama MCE Remote (<--link) as it totally stopped mine from working until I reverted the changes ("sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/hama_mce.rules" and rebooting is sufficient).

Re: OpenELEC meets Raspberry Pi - part 1 (XBMC)

All you need to do is to add the tag <name>MyVideos60</name> to your <videodatabase> section of advancedsettings.xml and it will then use that database. Depending on which version of XBMC is your "base" version, you might need to rename the above to whatever your MySQL database is called. Add the a...

Location should /.xbmc/userdata/advancedsettings.xml - in the same directory as guisettings.xml.

Right, has anyone got the MySQL stuff working on this yet? I've just worked out where to copy the advancedsettings.xml, but after a reboot it doesn't seem to have picked anything up. Worked for me - picked up the metadata I'd previously created with OpenELEC (a myvideos63 database), then Raspbmc au...

Re: Raspbmc Distribution now in Beta

@milhouse - Raspbmc doesn't use old firmware, the installer does. That is why you will notice that after install, all the issues are gone. If that's the case, then it means I just need to update the installer firmware in time for release. Thanks for the clarification, Sam. You're correct that I hav...

Re: OpenELEC meets Raspberry Pi - part 1 (XBMC)

For anyone using MySQL storage, I've been doing some reading and it seems the recommended approach is to use the MySQL database to store the shared metadata, but then use a local database/cache on each client for thumbnail storage (cover art, fan art etc.) . As far as I can tell, this means that pat...

I buy these (<---ebay link) - I've bought 3 so far and no problems whatsoever. One of them I use with a Harmony One remote (so I just needed the IR receiver) on x86/OpenELEC, and another I have tested with XBMC (raspbmc) and OpenELEC on a Pi - all worked fine.
