Re: 12v UPS DIY Help

Hi there, I assume you need the UPS to keep the Pi camera running over a power cut ? I suggest getting hold of one of those 'Power Bank' phone recharger units (= plug your normal mains power block into the 'Power Bank' unit and the output of the Power Bank into the Pi. NB one thing to watch for is s...

Re: Kstars, Celestia or Stellarium on the Raspberry Pi?

Stellarium == can be made to 'work', however it seems to have problems with Pi OpenGL, reverting to CPU rendering which makes it virtually unusable (takes 100s to refresh the screen) Kstars == has been used OK (refresh approx 1s) except the GUI for 'select a star' (goto) takes 6-8seconds to open ......

Re: What do people want to do that the rpi currently cannot

I want to use it away from mains-power, i.e. for a mobile 'in the field' application (= specifically positioning control of an astronomical telescope and control of the imaging sub-system) This requires that the Pi run directly from a 6v battery power source (= specifically, 4x 1.5v primary cells, a...

Pi Zero £4 - how long can the A+ stay at £18 ???

With the Pi Zero undercutting just about everything in the 'embedded' market, the A+, priced at upwards of £20 now seems rather 'over priced' .. in fact even £10 would be pushing it (for what is essentially just the two 'option' sockets) Will the price drop or will this product be dropped from the P...

Re: Command line Image viewer?

Yes, I know this is an old 'tread'', however it seems people do still use fbi so I thought I would 'post' my PhotoFrame 'final solution'. To recap:- You set up fbi to cycle through 3 'dummy' photos, all 'pointing' (using alias command 'ln -s' i.e. symbolic links) to the same 'master' photo. You then...

Re: fbi slide show script has gaps between images

can you pipe input and output to fbi ? Nope = however there is an 'improved' version of fbi, (fim) that can be 'piped' ... but has (multiple) other problems, not least of which is the need for user (keyboard) input before 'moving' from one photo to the next There is also a 'background' version (feh...

Re: Command line Image viewer?

fbi won't 'quit' cleanly (or at all) == It won't run in the background , so if you set it to 'loop' through a dir it will show all the images (that exist when it is launched = it does not recheck the dir contents later) just fine but that user log-in is then locked to fbi. If you set it to show a si...

Re: Using Pi as a remote slideshow player

fbi won't :- run in the background (if you 'loop' it, it has to be in the foreground, so your script 'stops' on the fbi command) accept images via stdin (or via any sort of 'pipe') clear up after itself (if you run if with a single image you 'get back focus' and the image stays 'on screen' - if you ...

Re: Programmically controlling FBI or another image viewer

I had a similar problem with fbi (not functioning in the background and 'eating' memory if you use it to show 1 image at a time) My requirement was to 'pause' a slideshow = I expect my 'cunning trick' with soft links (alias) will help you .. I set fbi to 'loop for ever' showing 3 'static' image name...

Re: Downgrade from Model B to A ?

YES !!! I had to do a bit of (sudo app-get upgrade) and (sudo apt-get install rpi-update) before I could (sudo rpi-update) without an 'unexpected redirect', BUT once the rpi-update completed OK I could switch the SDHC from the Model B to the A and it booted and ran the photoframe perfectly !! Many t...

Downgrade from Model B to A ?

I have my photo-frame fully working on a Model B in 'stand -alone mode' i.e no network, no KB:, nothing connected to the Pi but HDMI display & power (the images being shown on the photo-frame HDMI display are stored in a folder on the 4Gb SDHC card) To save some money for a new project, I decided to...
