Viel Erfolg!

Re: Weird Samba Issue

For connecting a Linux server to a Linux client, NFS is recommended. NFS and Samba can co-exist fine.

Re: Raspbian, what is root password?

Thanks for explaining that, much appreciated! As I'm just beginning with the RPi I'll investigate the device with Raspbian first. But at one time I think I'll be making the switch to a full Debian. Or another distro or even OS ;) (RiscOS anyone? :P ) We'll see. First I have to get some gear to get m...

Re: Raspbian, what is root password?

Apols for the late reaction, just joined the RPi forums recently. No need to enable root account. 'sudo <command>' is a great way of doing things. Sorry, but I have to disagree here. Sudo is a solution to a problem that never existed. There's nothing sudo can do what you couldn't do with the existin...

Re: Voltage drop on turning motors on

Further suggestion to prevent a reboot: connect the RPi power via a diode and let it have its own capacitor (but it doesn't need to be that big). If the motors then start and cause a voltage drop, the diode goes into reverse mode and will block the current flowing from the RPi capacitor to the motor...

Re: Can you auto mount a device over a previous mount?

You cannot "overwrite" a mountpoint if it's already in use. First, unmount the previous one, then mount the new drive instead. Udev should be able to do this, but you'd probably need a separate script to perform the actual task.

Re: ifconfig IP address is different to what DCHP assigns

Examine the file /etc/network/interfaces on your RPi. It should contain the following:

Code: Select all

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
If so, the device uses DHCP from your router.

Re: New Add-On idea's

That is, I want to see if the voltage is up to spec *under* *load*, and the way to do that is to make a board that will provide a load, preferably one that will pull at least as much as a Pi running all out (700mA), or more (1A) to verify that the power supply really can do it. That is fairly simpl...

A "WHOIS" query reveals the domain has last changed on July 24, so it could be the DNS has not propagated yet (4 days in? not likely!) The domain is linked to a company "SK Pang Electronics Ltd" who's PO box resides in Essex. If you do the query yourself you'd find a phone number and email address f...

Roco Z21, touchscreen and the Pi

Not sure this is the correct place for it, but I'm sure one of the mod's will move it if more appropriate elsewhere. Having purchased a set of Pi's my aim is to use one with a Roco Z21 device. This is a networked command station for use on model railway layouts. It's based on Lenz technology, so no ...

Re: Introduce yourself!

Hi all, Quick intro as requested: my nick reflects where I come from (doh  ) as well as my profession. The latter would need a little explanation. Remember your history teacher mauling over the Medieval period with their guilds, where a Master craftsman had one or more apprentices? Ions lat...
