Re: "Beginners" put off...

I don't entirely agree its the loss of basic per se, but I do agree its the loss of "the same standard accessible language" in every computer at switch on.

In the 80s they all had the same language - basic in rom, for free. BBC micro, spectrum, c64 etc.

I think its worth considering whether BASIC (currently only on RISC OS) should get at least an honourable mention You can install/run a few basics on raspian: yaBASIC: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=6930&p=91693#p91693 Gordon in that thread is also working on his own version...

There's a guide to setting up a web proxy here:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 6&p=236478

If its out of UK access to iplayer you want, you could also use the Pi as a VPN server:

Re: A word on preloaded SD cards

You can now use Berryboot to use a standard fat32 SD card and get the Pi to download/format/install an OS on the fly - no image program needed, just copy files over to the card, and boot the pi. http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot (assuming you have connected your Pi to your router via a...

I've never had any trouble with W32diskimager (on Vista). It does a grand job for me - whats the problem? On some (many?) PCs it doesn't detect the SD slots properly, so doesn't allow you to use them - the drive letter doesn't appear in the drop down list in the app - despite showing up as a remova...

Re: A word on preloaded SD cards

I think one of the biggest barriers is the imaging of the SD card with w32imager and its problems. Preloaded gets you up and running while you still have enthusiasm - and doesn't require a PC Sidenote: it's technically possible to do a loopfile based distro where you can just copy the large files ov...

Using Amiga Basic on a Commodore 64 didn't cause headbanging I'm sure you meant commodore basic on a c64, but interestingly AmigaBasic (on the Amiga) was actually one of the first BASIC versions to lose line numbers, and wasn't much used. Back in the 8bit days (ZX81/Spectrum/C64) lots of people did...

Motion by default restricts it's web server to localhost only (i.e. on the Pi itself) The relevant lines in /etc/motion/motion.conf are: webcam_localhost on control_localhost on Both the above lines should be set to off if you want web access from another computer: webcam_localhost off control_local...

Re: One (or more!) time-sensitive tasks

The Pi isn't a microcontroller. Even when idling there are multiple programs running. You'll probably have a hard time getting timed signals out of the Pi. That's not a problem of the Pi, just the linux OS most people happen to choose to run on it. Its entirely your choice what you boot the Pi into...

hehh, you like the hyperbole - Surface RT is priced nearly double netbook levels!
