Re: bonnie++: SD-card / USB-stick / NFS comparison

I think it is fair to say we have known for some time the SDcard interface on the model B Pi is "challenged". [email protected]:/home/raspbian# hdparm -t /dev/sda3 /dev/sda3: Timing buffered disk reads: 66 MB in 3.09 seconds = 21.37 MB/sec [email protected]:/home/raspbian# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=1M coun...

Re: Browsing Windows Shares From RaspPi in Debian

For the long answer please google cifs usage on linux, using windows shares or whatever. The short answer - add a line to /etc/fstab (you probably want to sudo nano /etc/fstab from a terminal window) //192.168.1.100/aaaa /mnt/server cifs username=bbbb,uid=1000,gid=1000,password=cccc correcting as ne...

Re: New Raspbian "Pisces" Image

I can bring up a terminal and use Windows key +e, they both work. I was just curious as to whether anyone else had this issue and if they managed to fix it. I dont think it is an issue - it is a feature! If you check openbox.org you can see the whole point is minimalist, but if you really want ther...

Re: Resolution help... again.

The long way is to check the EDID (and use edidparser) on your screen to check all the possibilities (there is another thread started by Gert on this somewhere). The short way is probably to add
framebuffer_width=1024
framebuffer_height=68
to your config.txt

After installing and performing rpi-update, if I type in startx for the gui I don't get the start bar at the bottom and I have to hit ctrl+alt+f2 to get back to the text based ui. add some overscan to your config.txt, e.g.
overscan_left=-20
overscan_right=-20
overscan_top=-20
overscan_bottom=-20
see troubleshooting in the wiki.

I think my ALSA is OK (started with the Pisces image) - aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and speaker-test -twav work fine from a terminal in openbox. But both vlc and mplayer are silent - mplayer gives Playing /mnt/server/Music/Keane/Hopes and Fears/01 Somewhere Only We Know.mp3. libavf...

OK, only 3 more comments about the Raspbian Pisces image: 1) Good move to put the swap partition second - makes resizing partition 3 even easier. 2) Love having a root user/password - coming from SuSE I am more used to su than sudo! 3) startx takes me in to openbox - a bit confused due to the LXDE r...

Re: Raspbian on "external" USB hard drive

I swapped my rootfs to a USB stick the other day and got decent gains. Actually my first USB stick was the same Class 10 micro-SD card I did my first RasPi boot from but hdparm and bonnie made it clear the Pi USB ports are far faster than the SDcard slot. Today went beserk and got a proper USB memor...

Re: New Raspbian "Pisces" Image

AWESOME :D Noticed on the stock Debian install I started with browsing was slugged by the CPU. So my benchmark (using the trusty stopwatch on my phone) was to load a particular web page. On stock Debian timed it twice - 13.x and 15.5 seconds. On Raspbian 8.1 secs! Woo. Literally just got Raspbian up...

Re: whats the root password for debian 19-4-2012

I'm curious; does anyone really think this sudo nonsense accomplishes anything? I find it a complete PITA. I am coming from SuSE and su in a terminal if/when I have the need and can do a whole heap of stuff without prefixing each line with sudo. Which makes sense to me. OTOH I know Linus threw his ...
