Re: MMAL motion with Camera V2

@jbeale Hi! Interesting! A lot of the picture in my first test was relatively close. Certainly leaves about 30cm away look sharp. Here is a crop with a hanging twig about 6m away which doesn't look bad, but the foliage further away does indeed look less sharp. And at the extreme right of the frame t...

MMAL motion with Camera V2

I just got my camera V2. I am happy to confirm that mmal-motion installed as per https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=864996#p864996 works well with the V2 camera module in a Raspberry Pi 3B running jessie lite. CPU usage is around 20% of one processor (so 5% of total available CPU) wi...

@hilndr44 What config options have you already tried? If are using my version of motion as described on this post, https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=864996#p864996 , and launched it with /home/pi/motion/motion -c /home/pi/motion/configs/motion-mmalcam-both.conf You should be getting...

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

@eponymous

Sorry, I have never tried to use RTSP, so I don't know. At least the newer Pis are have a lot more CPU power.

Good luck!

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

@eponymous No, MMAL motion is a very clever way of using the Pi camera and the Graphics Processing Unit. It will probably work for RTSP, but all the processing will be done in the CPU, so won't offer any benefit. If you get a Pi camera and want to run MMAL motion, you can leave your original version...

@dozencrows

Good idea of yours to merge motion-mmal. I am honoured! For some reason I can't PM you on this forum, but I have issued a github pull request. Please let me know if there is anything else I should do.

Best regards and thanks for your super work!!

Re: Motion/MMAL/Jessie

Hi @rutlandgizz! I have never been happy with changing the binaries in /usr. Either it gets overwritten in an update, or I get confused about which version or which config file it is actually using. I also don't use the daemon mode of motion. So I copy my config file to my home directory, then test ...

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

@PiJay I don't use a display on my raspberry pi, so can't be much use to you. First of all make sure that you have got motion to stream properly to another computer as I said in my last post. Then, if your LCD is displaying a normal desktop on your raspberry pi (i.e. you are using X), are you saying...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@Iman_Hindi Did you change the config file? I always have: daemon off and have never seen that error. If you want to use daemon mode, you have to change the location of the pid file (or in theory you could fiddle with permissions or run as root, but I think that isn't recommended). You could try thi...

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

@PiJay I am not quite sure I understand your question 1, given that you mention port 8081 in your second question. For me, I view the camera output in realtime by pointing my browser (Firefox) at http://IP_address_of_my_pi:8081, where IP_address_of_my_pi is the local IP address of the Pi running mot...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@boyfleming

Hi! I think those errors mean that your Raspberry Pi isn't connected to the internet (or if it is, it can't reach a nameserver). You could try searching on the internet for those errors - for example:

Code: Select all

Could not resolve 'mirrordirector.raspbian.org'
Hope this helps.

@TMartin Great that you got it working! Have a look at the very good motion wiki at http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome . Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@SupahNoob That error is a new one on me and I couldn't find anything immediately with google. Exactly how do you launch motion using Python? Are you sure it is using the right config file? You could try to increase the logging level and see if you get any useful diagnostic information.

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@urbalk It looks according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III that your S3's screen is 720×1280 pixel resolution, so this would be a good starting point. But depending on how you are planning to transfer the picture and what app you will use on the S3, the picture can be scaled to...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@maya I don't think the Raspberry Pi is powerful enough for motion to do 10 frames per second at 640x480. You could try 2 or 4 frames per second, or reduce the resolution. The clever bit about dozencrows' idea is that you can get motion also to save still images at higher resolution if you want. In ...

@urbalk Hi! In fact that is just a warning that you don't have a file that I use. You can ignore those messages. I use the helper program /home/pi/bin/motion_resize.py to move the captured images and movies out of /run/shm/ and put them on my web page. In fact if you don't move them out, /run/shm/ w...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@Kreachers Your best plan to find out about the standard features (i.e. non mmal) of motion would be to spend some time looking at the superb motion wiki http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome . You can find out there about all the options including where it looks for config files. Re...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@nevyoung Sounds like a perfect project for a Raspberry Pi. Web streaming at low resolution is good for keeping your 3g bandwidth usage low. Also the low res stills can be used as thumbnails on a web page so you only download high res stills or movies that are really interesting. I use php and apach...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@Kreachers I will try to answer some of your questions... Your first segmentation fault looks as if it is caused by your Pi not being able access the Raspberry Pi camera module. Is that what you want to use? If so, is it enabled in raspi-config? Is something else accessing it first? The difference b...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@jscott13 Um, you are almost right about which config file. The command ./motion -c motion-mmalcam-both.conf works out like this... the ./motion means "execute the file called motion in the current folder " the -c means that the next thing is the config file. and the motion-mmalcam-both.conf (withou...

Re: Motion MMAL using roughly 95% cpu when streaming, 50% id

@chinobar I think you are missing some lines in the config file. At least, the brilliant idea of dozencrows was to run the main part of motion at a lower resolution, so reducing processing power. At 640x480 at a framerate of 100, with all processing done in motion, you are lucky to get it to run at ...
