The choice of SD over Mirco was deliberate as the hardware is more rugged. I don't think they liked having such a small memory card either.

Thanks, I actually prefer that solution, it makes the board itself entirely disposable if you can just plug into another device!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm used to my hardware on a larger scale!
Will RPi have on-board storage and if so what size? I haven't had much time to look into it but from the forum vid it looks like the SD card could fill this function?
