Re: Installing Linux

If you want to get familiar without taking any risks, I would advise to either - try out a Linux distro from a bootable USB key - install Oracle VirtualBox, and install Linux in a VM so that you can run it from within Windows. Debian, which is one of the Pi recommended distros, has a Live CD (or USB...

Re: There's a business in that for someone...

Amstrad's device is a particularly bad deal. There are plenty of much more worthy doodads, starting with the Apple TV, which is $100 I think, and stil rootable ? I'm not quite sure which does what in detail, and I'm a semi-nerd, so even if the Pi once accessorized is not more expensive than the iTV,...

Re: Samba: Mount windows folder

I think there's some weirdness in Windows 7/Vista sharing that throws non-windows PCs a bit off. Sorry, I don't remember specifics ^^ Fixable though.

if you want to try your google-fu, the technical term is slideshow ^^ there must be some utility to do a looping slideshow in Linux, even from the command line, I just have no clue what it is and what is available on debian fro ARM.

Re: pc supply

Hi If the question is: Can a PC power my Pi, the answer is: probably. The Pi needs 2x more power than a standard USB device, but, many PCs are OK with that. Depends on the PC though, try it. If the question is: can a PC power supply power my Pi, then answer is: Yes, look for the 5V outputs. It's ver...

It should. You'll need a cable to go from the Pi's HDMI output to the monitor's DVI input, but just a passive cable, couple of dollars.

Re: Wrong cable....

Some USB cables are just for charging, some do charging *and*synch. Those that only do charging don't use all pins, so it's conceivable they don't wire them. I doubt you could have inserted the wrong USB cable in the connector. They are all quite different. The difference you noticed is probably due...

I've fallen in love with my Galaxy Note's AMOLED screen. Blacks are black, not the weird glowing black of LCDs. And I much prefer to read white on black, or even green on black, than traditional black on white. Colors are very loud, but unless your a photo geek, that actually rather nice. The Samsun...

No need to get your back up. To each his own, and this is a nice case, but a very expensive one on the Pi's scale. Everybody is right, and everybody has a right to say there piece without being sniped at.

I was wrong about christianity, I was thinking of impact more than "rightness". Make that religion/ethics/philosophy. And add what Sid Meier's Civilization calls "Scientific Method" as a counterpart ^^ Also, where I live the Acer A200 is 250 euros, the iPad2, 400. Not the same ballpark. Video chat c...

The Pi is not really the best device do to that. - there's a lot of other ways to do that with x86 PCs - the Pi has no Video input, nor Sound input of good quality - the GPU can't help with the video encode (software/IP issues), and the CPU is very weak for it You're better of looking for an expansi...

This is often due to either (or both ^^) a bad power supply (power supplied much below advertised one),power cable (someone compared a lot of them to wet rope, not ideal for conducting electricity), keyboard (some have power requirements much higher than the 100mA the Pi can supply, this is never li...

No. This cable assumes that the HDMI (digital) side also supplies VGA (analog) signals, which the Pi (and most other HDMI outputs) doesn't.

Re: Streaming media over LAN from RasPi?

Typically, you don't set up a web server to stream media over a LAN, you set up a DLNA server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dlna, they're having fun creating words, but basically it's like a network, with (a) server(s) and (a) client(s), with an added optional "remote" that act like, well, a remote)...
