is http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setu ... on_Windows good enough ?

As a distribution, you want to use Debian, not Arch which is a bit harder to get into.

That's clever, and cheap ^^ I'll probably just secure the Pi with elastic bands.

Thanks for the idea.

I don't know if it's my super Mod powers, or if the "edit by" date isn't here yet, but I'm still able to edit Nexy's sticky right now. If Nexy can tell me what edits to make, I'll gladly make them, and keep making them if you have more in the future, just PM me with the changes. I think having a rea...

@OP: Sure. Please come back as soon as you've exhausted the hardware and software development learning you can do on the Pi. That's what the Pi is for.

Re: XBMC time using

The Pi's chip turns off the bits of itself that aren't used, so power consumption and dissipation are very low (2W).
You can put a power switch on the Pi's power cord if your really want to. Remember to shutdown properly before switching it off.

They are not very active in desktop PCs, a fair bit more in laptops. I know I don't buy anything without che...

Re: USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive Docking Station

Those speeds are extremely theoretical: 1- both interfaces have overhead, USB a lot more than SATA. So that 480 Mbps pipe really doesn't ever deliver more than around 350 of useful data. 2- USB uses a lot of CPU cycles to manage the connection and handle the data. Someone's noticed that even with ju...

2- Get ready for the next batch of "but my browser is much slower than your video" posts. Are there noob-proof instructions somewhere on how to get that speed ?

Re: Installing Linux

If you want to get familiar without taking any risks, I would advise to either - try out a Linux distro from a bootable USB key - install Oracle VirtualBox, and install Linux in a VM so that you can run it from within Windows. Debian, which is one of the Pi recommended distros, has a Live CD (or USB...

Amstrad's device is a particularly bad deal. There are plenty of much more worthy doodads, starting with the Apple TV, which is $100 I think, and stil rootable ? I'm not quite sure which does what in detail, and I'm a semi-nerd, so even if the Pi once accessorized is not more expensive than the iTV,...

if you want to try your google-fu, the technical term is slideshow ^^ there must be some utility to do a looping slideshow in Linux, even from the command line, I just have no clue what it is and what is available on debian fro ARM.

Re: pc supply

Hi If the question is: Can a PC power my Pi, the answer is: probably. The Pi needs 2x more power than a standard USB device, but, many PCs are OK with that. Depends on the PC though, try it. If the question is: can a PC power supply power my Pi, then answer is: Yes, look for the 5V outputs. It's ver...

It should. You'll need a cable to go from the Pi's HDMI output to the monitor's DVI input, but just a passive cable, couple of dollars.

Re: Wrong cable....

Some USB cables are just for charging, some do charging *and*synch. Those that only do charging don't use all pins, so it's conceivable they don't wire them. I doubt you could have inserted the wrong USB cable in the connector. They are all quite different. The difference you noticed is probably due...
