Re: ReactOS , not Windows !

<t>That's the issue; ReactOS wants to be a Windows XP clone, ie let you run Windows software with ReactOS instead of Windows.<br/> That's a tall order because you've got to emulate 1,000s of Windows APIs and millions of lines of code that are not only closed-source but also protected IP.<br/> But si...

Re: ReactOS , not Windows !

<t>I think it's a nice project to work on as a developer, but I don't see the end result being very interesting for end users:<br/> - most Windows software is either proprietary, and x86 only; or it is open, and available on Linux too<br/> - porting a 2001 OS is nice. Using a 2011+ OS, nicer. I'd ev...

Re: ETA for for model B

<t>There have been a few surprise supplier delays, so the 100 beta boards are only being manufactured as we speak, which is a good week late. Next comes intense testing, and then real manufacture by 10,000 batches. The Q4 deadline for commercial availability may be missed, or barely made, especially...

<t>It seems like a bare implementation of the Marvell SoC. I wouldn't be too worried about software, they don't seem to have added anything proprietary... actually, they don't seem to have added *anything* to the SoC.<br/> It's tempting @ 99€. They hammer on the shipping though, 30€ to France. I got...

<t>I would argue than Linux\'s auto-update is better than Window\'s because it covers ALL software, not just the OS (Windows Update) or MS\'s Apps (MS Update).<br/> On the other hand, UN-installing software is not really supported in Linux. Re: BASIC - more harmful than useful?

@jswstella: depends entirely on what you want to do. I think a generic first step would be to install xubuntu or lubuntu in a Virtualbox VM on your PC (not even the ARM version, the 386-32 one), then Python 3, then start doing whatever it is you want to do ^^

Re: BASIC - more harmful than useful?

<t>I agree in theory, I disagree in practice. For the same reason we don't teach kid several spoken tongues at the same time, actually. Language is not just concepts and syntax, it is also vocabulary and experience. Basic has tens of keywords, same for python. Then you've got system variables. Then ...

Re: BASIC - more harmful than useful?

<t>True, any language will let you do pretty much anything, and the most important thing is to actually do it, and teach it. And there are plenty of versions of basic, even OO ones.<br/> What worries me is that most talk of basic is about the 80s version (non-OO), and that starting off non-OO makes ...
