It seems your best bet seems to be to change the regulator: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... f=2&t=6050.

The A version should be available for the Academic launch, which is a few months away I guess.

Re: Media Server Madness

I haven't tried minidlna on my Pi yet. Since all movies do show up on Android, I would assume there is something in the file description that flags them as "not playable on xbox". I have no clue what though.

Re: USB Disk spin down

I'd try hdparm (http://linux.die.net/man/8/hdparm), though most of the parameters do not work on USB drives. Be careful and only tweak what you *need* to.

sudo hdparm -B /dev/whatever

to check it's vaguely operational, then -B 255 or 254 if 255 doesn't work ?

Re: Samba and Windows 7 PC not getting on

I've had fun with Samba too... 1- does your Windows machine see your Pi at all ? Can it ping it ? Are their LAN addresses on the same subnet ? (192.168.xx.xx or similar) 2- 7's network browser is a pain. Have you tried entering your Pi's IP address directly in Explorer's address bar ? 3- what Samba ...

Re: Dropbox-like filecloud

I must be dumb, I still don't see why good old FTP can't do it. All web browsers I know can also browse an FTP server, and FTP clients often have a sync function on top of the upload one. Nevermind, do the cloud thing. The whole thing reminds me of when I was told that FTP was unsafe, so docs *had* ...

Has anyone bothered to test if the optimizations listed above have any impact at all on the SD ? Are they by default in the Pi images ?

Re: Which distro ?

Raspbian certainly seems a good way going forward, recompiling debian to fully take advantage of the Pi's limited hardware makes a lot of sense. I'm just concerned that I might struggle if I ever need something that's not in the repo (minidlna comes to mind), or that updates and docs/support might f...

Re: Dropbox-like filecloud

No need to go to the cloud to set up a sync between 2 local folders (and Dropbox is not available on the PI, nor is anything similar yet, though Ubuntu's stuff looks like it *might* be portable) First, you want to make sure both folders are shared on the network. The Pi uses Samba to share its folde...

Re: Simplifying booting between distros.

I seem to remember seeing on this forum that you can chain-load a kernel form another kernel. ie, we could have the Pi booting off the same files for all distros, then chain-loading a specific kernel and rootfs, only by tweaking the initial kernel's "then chain-load" parameter. I'll look that up onc...

The Pi doesn't have a Mali400, but a videocore 4 GPU. Both are very different beasts, and totally incompatible. The Pi supports OpenGLES, not full OpenGL.

Re: Can I use an old desktop screen?

1- If you've got a working config, make sure you change it only 1 item at a time, so that you're *sure* what's causing the problem. In your case, make sure you keep the same HDMI cable, power supply... and just change the TV 2- To easily try out different HDMI parameters, you can either set your 2 T...
