Re: An interesting look at things.

DavidS: Sorry if this is a bit OT but... did you really get that PC for free? Or by freebee you mean "really cheap". Because around here a setup like the one you got would cost around 150-200$. Good luck with your quest, even if really don't understand why you want what you want. But hey, to each it...

tightvnc now with encryption supported? tightvnc hasn't been touched at all. RealVNC comes pre-installed, but I don't know if the applied license allows encryption. If you would like to use tightvnc with encryption, look up tightvnc ssh tunnelling. Hmmm... Is my connection encrypted? Yes, if you ha...

Re: PIXEL desktop: Large menu folders crash taskbar

Just to add information about this error: If after disabling the "Other" category, I open again the Main Menu Editor (under Preferences) and click the "Cancel" button the Menu bar crashes and the "Other" category is re-enabled.

Re: PIXEL desktop: Large menu folders crash taskbar

Same here. My "Other" sub menu (actually named "Otras" - in spanish) has only 4 elements: "Screen Lock" (or something along the liones, I'm translating the spanish name), "LibreOffice XSLT based...." (I can't see the whole name), "Logout" and "Where am I". I've also noticed that if I enable or disab...

What about the overheating issues reported for the Rpi3? Will the new RPI2+ inherit that problem?

About security, routers and intrusion detection on the RPi

Hi. I have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer. Let's say I have a properly configured router with strong password (whatever "properly configured" and "strong password" means - that's not the point here). This router has no port forwarding enabled. Let's say I connect a Raspberry to this...

One last thing, just out of curiosity: how are you running the Virtualhere Client? Are you passing it any configuration options?

Re: How to ssh Raspberry Pi usb remotely from other place

I don´t think you´re doing it right... First: The reverse tunnel has to be created by the Pi. So the " ssh -N -R etc etc etc " line must be run on the pi. And yes, you need the -N. Actually there are a few more options that could be useful: /usr/bin/ssh -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o ServerAliveCountM...

Re: How to ssh Raspberry Pi usb remotely from other place

The solution to your problem might be to create a reverse ssh tunnel from the pi to your server in such a way that any data sent to your server´s port 7575 is routed to the pi´s port 7575 automatically - no need to do port forwarding on your router or anything like that. By reading your posts it loo...

Re: Raspberry Pi 'community'

Should have known... For one moment I forgot how far I am from the "real" world... A few months ago I saw some of those selling locally for about 4 times that price, that's why I got so excited.... Buy then 5$ plush shipping would add to what that guy was asking.

Re: Raspberry Pi 'community'

RPi forums seem fine to me, and the mods do an impressive job considering the sheer size of the task. Meanwhile the hardware just keeps getting better. Not specific to Pi but I recently got myself a few "PS3 Eye" webcam/4-channel mic items (how can they cost only $5 !?) and pleased to see that both...

At what time do you plan to update the blog? I hope the servers (RPis, right?) can handle the traffic as well as they did the last time you announced something.

If stores in the UK open their doors at 8am (and update their sites at that same time) then we still have to wait for 1 hour and 24 minutes.

Re: A picture from The Pi Hut

You're all missing the big picture - it will make users happy (an oft requested feature), but will not cost more - clearly what they've done is silkscreened a big smiley face onto the board. That´s seems reasonable, except for the fact that such smiley face wouldn´t need a new firmware. Unless they...

Re: Using the RP to act as an alarm clock and lock a door?

Instead of locking you in the bathroom, why don't have the RPi lock you out of you bedroom? As soon as you reach the alarm in the bathroom it locks the bedroom door for a certain amount of time, enough to brush your teeth, wash your face and that.

I think the OP is looking for a way to use the RPI as an OpenVPN client, so that all traffic going out of the RPi goes thru the OpenVPN server.

Still, more info is needed, as what are the steps already tried.
