Thanks, I didn't know you had to install ifplugd, I'll give it a try now

Re: read temp and show on a page

Here's what I use to display my weather stats. I collect observations every minute. However, I only want to show a set of 12 observations, which are an hour apart e.g. 10:31, 9:31, 8:31, etc, with the most recent at the top. I wish I could claim credit for the clever bit of SQL that does this, but I...

Re: Another WiringPi Which Pin Question

If I change: io = wiringpi.GPIO(wiringpi.GPIO.WPI_MODE_SYS) to io = wiringpi.GPIO(wiringpi.GPIO.WPI_MODE_PINS) and adjust the rest of the code from pin 17 to pin 0 it works as expected, albeit I need to sudo. So it looks as though it may be a bug in the Python library. Just in case it makes any diff...

Error Using Python smbus with Archliux

I am trying to get the Adafruit BMP085 python library to work on Arch Linux. I have installed i2c-tools, but am getting errors trying to access the smbus from python: [[email protected] scripts]$ python2 Python 2.7.3 (default, Dec 25 2012, 21:52:48) [GCC 4.7.2] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits...

Re: Another WiringPi Which Pin Question

Thanks, I had already tried 17 without success. Given that it works using RPi.GPIO library the wiring must be correct, so the other two options are I have got the wrong PIN number, or there is a bug in the Python library. I'll try wiring it up on breadboard and see if it works, which should exclude ...

Suggestions for Liquid Level Sensor

I need to monitor the level of several tanks containing heating oil/diesel. At the moment I am using a simple dip stick. However, I would like to monitor these electronically. I did some experiments with an ultrasonic range finder, but it wasn't accurate enough for various reasons. Has anyone got an...

Re: Network Problems with Ethernet and WiFi Both Configured

I run my own dhcp server and do a similar thing with some of the computers in the house, assigning them static ip's based on their mac address. I use it in combination with Squid proxy server to limit the children's access to things like YouTube at certain times of day. My isp gives me unlimited dow...

Re: DS18B20 Max Distance

Thanks for all the suggestions. Changing to 5v and dropping the load resistor value helped when I used bare sensors. However, I want to use one of Adafruits waterproof sensors. The sensor will be outside and I have had several problems with bare sensors suffering from condensation, even though they ...

Another WiringPi Which Pin Question

This is probably obvious to everyone except me:) I have a slice of Pi board and I want to toggle an LED attached to the pin labelled GP0 on the board. I have managed to do this in python using RPi.GPIO where the pin is numbered 17. The pin numbering for the Slice of Pi is shown at http://openmicros....

Re: Network Problems with Ethernet and WiFi Both Configured

No I didn't, but I didn't try very hard. My system basically runs on WiFi, so I just commented out the ethernet part of /etc/network/interfaces. If I need to re-enable ethernet I just pull out the SD card and edit the file on another computer.

Re: DS18B20 Max Distance

Thanks. I tried running it off 5v, but same result. The only other thing I can think of is that my PSU (Samsung Galaxy 2) isn't beefy enough. I am awaiting delivery of a powered hub from ModMyPi, which can also act as a PSU. I'll see if that make any difference. If that doesn't work would something ...

Re: Host monitoring and the Pi - what software?

Another alternative is monit see http://mmonit.com/monit/ Much easier to setup than Nagios, which is a real pig. Yet another alternative is salt at http://saltstack.com/ However, that's probably vast overkill for what you want. Salt is written in Python and runs on both Linux and Windows.

Re: DS18B20 Max Distance

Thanks I'll try that as I have it running from 3.3V at the moment. If I connect a 4K7 between that data line and the Pi 3V3, the connect VDD to 5V would that be safe?

DS18B20 Max Distance

OK this is a "How long is a bit of string" question :) I have already read a similar thread: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=30026 I want to place one of these sensors outside. The distance is around 3m, which as I understand it should be no problem. I have tried both Cat 6 an...

Network Problems with Ethernet and WiFi Both Configured

I have got a WifFi dongle from PiHut which works fine. However, I would like to leave my ethernet interface configured in case I ever need to boot without the Wifi dongle. However, if I unplug the ethernet cable and reboot, the Pi doesn't connect to the network. I suspect that it's waiting for ever ...

Re: BMP085 sensor, Python Error

If you have a newer Pi you need to change a line in Adafruit_I2C.py as a bus address has changed:

class Adafruit_I2C :

def __init__(self, address, bus=smbus.SMBus(1), debug=False):

The default smbus.SMBus(0) should be changed to 1 as shown above.
