After you have logged in on the command line type startx and press enter.

If you want to bypass the command line type raspi-config and press enter, it is on the options list.

Please can some one please explain why on a 256MB Pi this is slow and unresponsive, I have had 5 attempts to get it running well and is now OK except for the speed !

Considering the Raspberry Pi Foundation Distro is Raspbian "wheezy" which has the LXDE Desktop environment, I would consider:

Lubuntu similar look & feel, as uses the LXDE Desktop...
or
Debian with the LXDE Desktop is another option

Looking around seems that Mono version 2 http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/mono.html
