Re: Open/Closed or Somewhere-in-between source?

(under law it has to be making money) Not true. It is a strong expectation in the current market, but maximising return on investment for shareholders is not a legal requirement. There is nothing to stop any company prioritising social impact over profit except that their share price may fall. Shar...

Re: Open/Closed or Somewhere-in-between source?

If MS's line that the locked bootloader is there to prevent users from viruses is true, is it more immoral to let 99% of the population more open to viruses, or to deprive 1% of the population (the hackers), of multiboot on some machines ? There is no need to implement it hardwired for Windows, you...

Re: Open/Closed or Somewhere-in-between source?

It is infuriating that they took the domain and didn't use the option of forking. In future it might be worth copyrighting the domain/name and logos even if the source is open. This is what happens with Puppy linux, the name is copyright Barry Kauler (the original author) .... Legal issues Concernin...

Barry K (puppy's creator) now has a RPi, see-

A couple of other devs also have them, so its work in progress. Puppy is ideal for RPi as it small and user friendly ; -)

What distro and what version of ALSA are you using?

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

I wonder if anyone has any use for a copy of the old Programmers Reference Manual for RiscOs 3? Free to a good home, though you'd have to live nearby as its too heavy to post.

the info is available online, so that might be your best solution.

Re: RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

I've used WINE to run Irfanview and Appleworks portable quite nicely.  Some people have said they find WINE is more stable than Windows for some programs.  Also the overhead is only about 1% cpu.  In the RiscOS corner I was thinking about artGraph and various other art apps ; -)

Also, I think RPi went for robust construction and components due to its intended use in schools - not just cheapest.

Interesting that open source software is driving hardware design ; -)
