Re: Very basic guide to BASIC please?

Hi SiriusHardware, Goto the 'Apps' directory and launch !StrongEd which is an editor that will make coding a lot easier. At the bottom of the StrongED screen about halfway across is the legend 'BaseMode'. Click with the center mouse button and select 'Basic'. The StrongED screen backround will chan...

Re: !FFPlay

Well, umm, I'm guessing the problem was that I'd installed FFPlay from an archive stored on a FAT32 drive. I seem to remember something about filetypes being lost with FAT32? Good lesson!

!FFPlay

Hi,

I've used !FFplay for several weeks with no problems - but the other day I bricked the load and reblew - now !FFPlay returns an error re pthreads and context switching. I've updated the shared unix lib and the sound renderer - no joy. Any ideas chaps?

Re: Riscos Startup peculiar

Hang on.. you mentioned that you were overclocking the pi that boots RiscOS.. it may be that the machine refusing to boot may not be able to match the 'overclockability' (new word?) of the machine that boots correctly. Try it with a stock configuration file - that might do the job.

Re: Riscos Startup peculiar

The only other thing I can think of is an incompatible peripheral is causing !bootstrap to fail - try using the keyboard and mouse from the pi that riscos boots from and disconnecting all else.

Re: Riscos Startup peculiar

How curious :? After careful scrutiny with regard to AMcS's comments above I would try blowing another card with RiscOS and trying that in the recalcitrant pi as I've read that some combinations of OS/CARD/pi simply won't work. It might be worth checking the firmware level on the card (Sandisk have ...

Re: BBC BASIC: What is needed in TUTs/DOCs

I suppose it depends on the aspirations of the students.. for most purposes the original manual is very good and I would be strongly tempted to use existing documentation but the creation and use of, say, linked lists lies well outside that manuals remit. An idea might be to create a forum specially...

Re: Riscos Startup peculiar

Hi dntpls,

Sorry to be pedantic.. but.. Have you tried the RiscOS card from the pi that boots in the one that doesn't? (I sometimes forget the sync command after issuing a dd and get a spoiled load )

Re: Riscos Startup peculiar

It's probably easier to reload the card. Sometimes I've corrupted the system so much after overclocking such that even if config.txt is repaired the system still will not boot or run correctly. The thing with that is that corruption may go undetected for some time, so I'm never really happy until th...

Re: USB CDRom

I had to revert to stock configuration otherwise the system corrupted, but allowing that the import procedure worked fine. Tides of darkness ran! :) but too slowly to be playable even when overclocking to the max. Turning alignment exceptions off made a significant speed improvement but still too sl...

CD-Rom is working! Just went into !Configure.disks upped cdrom's from 0 to 1. Thanks Tide - as simple as that - and yes the unit is ancient! Hats off :)

Re: USB CDRom

Hi DavidS, it's a Freecom CD/DVD double layer capable unit but has no discernable model number. It's exciting to know that CD is supported. I'm amazed by the quantity of stuff already working.

USB CDRom

Does RiscOS support USBCDRom? I plugged one in but nothing appeared in the taskbar. It's not really a pressing issue - I found an ancient Blizzard Studios disk and wanted to play Warcraft2! lol

Re: SWI documentation/info

General protection error was a bucket term for otherwise undefined errors - although it's so long ago that i might well be using the wrong term. Yes GPF rings a bell so fault rather than error. Blummin' irritating he was.

Re: SWI documentation/info

Of the pro's.. Technical support is a key issue to creating stable soft wares. It's great to have a forum where that support is forthcoming and not constantly changing as other OS's seem to. It's like sitting down for a chat with Angela Rippon after sharing a cell with Sid Vicious. One slight drawba...

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

That is bad news DavidS. The fact that it is not strictly repeatable seems to indicate a variance in the way data is being read. Has the default SD read speed been increased/altered?

Hey SteveDrain. sorry chap - I posted without reading your latest post. If you've ever tried to program in Python then you really appreciate descriptive terminii. No endif/block/select/end while or any bloody thing. Just white space! Very Monty.

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

Also I just reran the Ackermann test program as I posted previously, with the default configuration (no overclocking at all, fresh boot) and it ran in 2.08 seconds on my RPi configured as follows: Default CONFIG.TXT CPU confiuration set to " ARMv7 fast mode ('alignment exceprions off') " Default sc...

Hmm.. for no reason that I can deduce my rpi now runs Ackermann's in 1.37 seconds when overclocked. All I did was watch a movie so I thought Aha! I'll boot the system again and I'll be back where I was.. but no..

Re: RISC OS; Pros and Cons

Thanks for Ackermann 's because I'd never even heard of it. What puzzles me most about it is why DavidS's raspi significantly outperforms mine when Ackermanning. Are you sneakily underclocking something DavidS? S'bliddy clever! Ackermann's as benchmark reflects stack efficacy? Riscos performs how w...
